New Nirvana box set, "With The Lights Out"

I think some of these are the Smart Studios/Vig demos.

Yes they are. Local rock scribe Jim Berkenstadt, who authored The Making of Nirvana's Nevermind as well as Black Market Beatles provided the source DAT for those demos. Seems that both Geffen and Butch had lost the original demo masters but Butch had given Jim a copy when he wrote the book on the making of the album.

Good story, jammyb.

There is a listening party for the Nirvana tomorow at the High Noon. Some sort of Onion sponsorship there. I believe we will be giving away a copy of the hefty box, which ships with a DVD w/20 clips.

yeah I saw that, sounds like a cool event. I'm listening to the Vig mix of "Smells Like..." right now.

I'm finding the box set not so hot. The first CD sounds like every bad punk band I heard in the 80's. The 2nd and 3rd CD's were OK, I just don't care that much about early versions of songs that ended up great in the final mix. The DVD and the booklet are the only things worth the money and the main reasons I don't regret buying it.
I guess if you were a huge Nirvana fan this is a must have otherwise I see it as another chance to make a buck from a dead horse. If you can buy just the DVD later or burn a copy then stick with that.

thanks for the review. I download the cd contents and I agree it is very interesting but not essential unless you are hardcore.
Two track boombox demos are cool to hear once just to get the flavor, but not much more. Supposedly they are going to release an updated version of "Live, Sold Out, Tonight" on DVD soon, and maybe they will include some of the box stuff there.

Agreement. Really scraping the bottom in some cases. "Blandest" sounds like a really horrible band that you would never want to see. It's Puddle Of Mudd bad. Some good stuff too, though.
