My flat screen is failing.

Postby iwiw99 » Thu Sep 12, 2013 6:35 pm

Mitsubishi LCD HDTV, 52 inches, bought January 2009. The lower 1/4 is going dark. Is it worth repairing? If not, what do I do with it. Paid 2800 at the time which was a fortune at the time, no regrets as I have really enjoyed it. Seems like a comparable TV today is more like a grand. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

post a model number so I can do some digging.

And I just got my LED LCD 50" Wifi Smart TV (Samsung of course) for $799 at Costco. TV's are getting really cheap now, especially with 4k getting closer and cheaper.

My friends always use me to find the best deal on a TV because I do a lot of research and always find the best offers somehow, so if you need help, let me know.

I have two minutes before I head home, but I didn't see any common issues for that model, so it may just be an end of life issue. You may have just gotten all the life out of it that you can. It's not going to be worth much, but you can try to sell it on cl for someone for parts.

A little piece of advice - do not ever buy a Mitsubishi TV again. Or a Dynex, or any other crap brand. Samsung, LG, Panasonic are some of the top ones you do want to buy. I will check on this thread tomorow.

LCD TV's have cold-cathode fluorescent light tubes in them.
(before they started switching to LED backlights)

But this isn't a tube you can buy at menards.
Still, it's a repairable issue if that is really what the problem is.
Maybe replace all the tubes as the other 3 are the same age as the one that failed.

This things run on very high voltage, btw.
