Waterfalls

Postby zeropoint » Wed Jul 17, 2013 1:25 am

I am not a native Midwesterner and haven't traveled much in WI outside of Madison. I'm looking for a nice waterfall to go to that isn't too far away. What's your recommendation?

Don't go chasing them.

http://www.gowaterfalling.com/has handy interactive maps and pictures of the falls. Most of the best ones are in northern Wis and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Not exactly nearby, but if you wanted to make a 3 day trip, you could probably see 20-30 of them. Many of them are not huge in size, but they are very scenic.

We did a trip like that last year - it was lots of fun. Make sure to print the maps out before you leave - the UP can be skimpy on cell reception. One or two of them may require some moderate bushwhacking to get a good view, but most of them are easy to get to.

Copper Falls is beautiful (see map). There's a whole line of falls along the edge of that particular geological formation.

Unfortunately it's the edge of the Penokee Hills so if that's an issue for you, be warned.

I'll second Copper Falls. It was a bit crowded when I went, but there are some nice trails around the area. If you do go, don't skip Potato Falls which is only about 12 miles away.

Presque Isle River, Porcupine Mtn. State Park in the U.P. This is probably farther then you want to go. You have to park and hike in but it's well worth it.

Lucky you. Here's hoping there hasn't been a recent black fly hatching.

That was the first thing I thought about when I saw the mine company hired a bunch of guards from Arizona. Black flies. Wisconsin's way of keeping out the riffraff when it isn't winter.

I've found the most important factor on this, and other annoying insects up there, is wind direction. From the south (and therefore the woods) = bad bugs. From the north (and therefore the lake) = not bad bugs.
