WTF, Johannsen’s Greenhouses is going out of business?

Postby Mad Howler » Sat Jul 13, 2013 11:41 pm

This is going to complicate my Mothers Day gift planning, amongst other plans.
Adiós to an excellent local business. Anyone know the backstory on this one?

They will be missed.

It's a good reminder to us all to shop at independent businesses whenever possible, rather than places like Home Despot.

Except this isn't really because they weren't getting enough business. Everybody wanted to retire and the only buyer was the guy who wanted the land for his dealership.

I don't think they were the only buyer. They received an "unsolicited offer" from Kayser. The dealership made them an offer they couldn't refuse, and they took the money and ran. Good for them, bad for us. Life goes on.

I wonder if all the construction on nearby Beltline interchanges also factored into their decision to sell out. While the Fish Hatch work is near completion, Seminole Highway has just started and the maasive Verona interchange reconstruction will take years to complete.

That's what I thought - they probably decided to get while the gettin' was good...

I'm not saying the only reason they are retiring the business is big box stores. But it's a part of it in their case; the family comments that the younger generation has been taught to shop at big box stores, making it harder for independent businesses to see a way forward. And the youngest sibling doesn't plan to retire yet.

In the case of many other small businesses, big box stores have destroyed them. Take a drive around to any small Wisconsin town that was set upon by Walmart in the last couple decades and check out their small business scene.

Another part of this is the sky-high prices being offered for desirable real estate. It'd be hard to walk away from what the Johannsens were being offered, and it would be near impossible for them to buy a similarly well-located piece of land so they could continue.

Yeah. Just kinda one of those times when lots of factors combine ... it's good to see all their hard work rewarded with a financial windfall, at least.

The emptied lot is for sale, I am happy they stuck the deal at high tide.

K&A nicely met our mothers day need this year.
Life flows on with a mild sting,
As usual.
