Definite Madison character: Thong Cape Scooter Man

Not sure how long he's been doing his thing, but I saw him on and around Sherman Ave a few times last year.

Don't expect to find young characters. You don't get to be a character (or have a bunch of good stories) without a certain amount of mileage, IMO.

Sheesh Jason! I welcome you to visit any of Madison's local bicycle shops and ask to speak with the owner. BOOM! Character galore!

A fun fact for Prof. Wagstaff:

The word "bozo" derives from the French slang term "bouseaux" (meaning "hick, peasant, or yokel"). However, bouseaux literally means "cow turds." ("Cow turds the Clown" anybody?)

mel, floyd, pants

tunnel bob? I think not, transcends the category.

stu!

Sheppy loiters nearby, unremarked.

Meade, clearly. & his muted band of grumping trolls.

ID-ing characters requires an investment of some time, so ya notice the behavior patterns that otherwise don't stand out. e.g., keedo, xtopher. Not everyone juggles, wears purple or renames themselves loon. Or walks around in chainmail and asuit of armor. Some just run for office & hope no one notices.

Tunnel Bob. I've seen him walking around UW for years, but didn't know he frequented the tunnels.

The Badger Herald went on an exclusive tour of campus' underground steam tunnels in an investigation to uncover the man behind the 'Tunnel Bob' mystery
https://badgerherald.com/news/2015/04/1 ... -labrynth/

"As the shadowy figure strolled coolly along, deflecting questions and speaking in fragmented sentences a picture began to emerge of a man who trusted very little and was obsessed with steam tunnels. He had visited the steam tunnels of other schools around the nation but had returned to Madison’s, where his subterranean exploration began years ago. Tunnel Bob had been exploring, but not living in, UW’s century-and-a-half old steam tunnels for more than 30 years."

Solidarity Singers are protesters with a purpose, and good folk singers. They aren't odd characters like some of these others.

I got to know TB about a decade ago. My best friend bought the house he was living in. TB lived with his elderly mom. His parents were a German couple. The problem is that TB was attached to the house he grew up in, and for a long time kept returning to stare in window. My friend was a woman living alone, unthrilled by attentions. I forget how it was resolved. I spent many hours working in that basement on various projects, thinking about TB.

A real eccentric on State was Charles Lunde, a classical music expert who worked at various record stores over the years, lastly at Exclusive Company. I remember him skulking about at night with his cape. He was grumpy at times, but also very helpful. I remember he kept a picture behind counter of when he was a handsome young sailor in WW2. The only grudge I bear is he had intense dislike for Van Morrison, not sure why I remember that.

The legend of Ben Masel lives on.

Jim Mallon and Leon Varjian have largely faded from memory, even if the postcards will live forever.

Here's Leon leading the boombox parade. There's my old mate Doug Wanberg from Green Lantern Co-op days playing first boombox. DW (named after the filmmaker) had a cable show to feature his wacky films. Both the 602 club and Green Lantern Co-op next door were bottomless pits of interesting oddballs.

I just remembered Leon leading cheers for the baseball team at Warner. That was his post-Pail-and-Shovel-Party calling.
