Bigger embarrassment: UW or state legislature

Postby jjoyce » Wed May 01, 2013 9:31 am

Last week, state Rep. Robin Vos said the UW has "continually, time after time after time [note: that's three times the times], embarrassed the state of Wisconsin."

So when you think of Wisconsin and start listing its attributes, where on that list do you place the UW? And where does the legislature show up?

When we talk about people from the state who have gone on to do great things, how many are former or current legislators? Who is more accomplished, those occupying seats in the west wing of our state capitol building or those engaged in groundbreaking research along University Avenue?

Jason, apparently you misunderstand what Vos was addressing.
The system has mishandled a number of matters, he said, citing its development of the WiscNet broadband system, a recent report that it had made $33 million in benefit overpayments to employees, a payroll system that had to be scrapped and the decision to cancel classes when President Barack Obama visited campus during his re-election bid last year.

I know that Vos believes the UW mishandled those incidents (to date, there's no consensus on whether retaining cash reserves of 12% constitutes "mishandling"). And I'm sure there was similar opprobrium from RoVo for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation's various mishandlings, I just can't find it. He's a real Steady Eddy on these things, very consistent.

The question remains: Which do you think is a bigger embarrassment, the UW or the state legislature?

Fred Clark running the red light and plowing into the bicyclist was embarrassing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hPB9t1qCas

There's also no consensus on the Wiscnet program other than the fact that the private internet providers don't like it even though there are areas that none of them would serve.

The only thing in Meade's list that everyone agrees went wrong was the first iteration of a major software project.

UW or legislature?

It's not that complicated... pick one.

I choose the one whose membership over the last ten years has won the least number of national and global awards.

Legislature.

As a "responsible" private member of society I'm expected to set aside 10% of my take home pay as a reserve. I'd expect the same out of my public institutions (especially when they are relentlessly pushed to act more like a private institution)

You'd be hard-pressed to show me ANY university that is less of an embarrassment than ANY legislature.

No. Yes. I'm confused. You know what I mean.

(thank you, replace "less" with "more")

Thanx, Massimo. Yes, I was pretty sure I knew what you meant and my vote also goes to "state legislatures hands down, across the board are universally more embarrassing than just about anything that universities can even dream about. I am excepting all for-profit so-called "universities - they are easily as embarrassing as our state house residents.

Like that? It's one of my favorite words, along with 'obstreperous.'
