More from the vapid Chris Rickert

Postby Stu Levitan » Sun Apr 21, 2013 10:34 am

Only Rickert could write a column beginning with an admission of failure: "There’s little point in opining on Ron Johnson from ground zero of Wisconsin’s progressive political establishment." And it doesn't get any better after that.

He skewers Johnson and the anti-government types pretty good.

You got a problem with that?

I guess you have a more generous standard for skewering than I do.

Okay, so Senator Johnson voted on the gun contol bill in a way that reflects the views of the majority of Wisconsin voters. Why didn't Democrats simply celebrate the measures that did pass?
It passed overwhelmingly with votes from both parties plus 2 Independents. Celebrate that victory and commit to building on it. Why do Democrats think this shaming approach is a good one? We saw it 2 years ago in the Wisconsin Assembly and we saw it again last week after the Senate votes on gun control. Like Stu attacking Rickert personally rather than debate the merits of what Rickert wrote -- it's childish and ineffectual.

At least I'm not vapid and bland in my unawareness, I hope.

No, he didn't, unless 19% now constitutes a majority. That's just the universal background checks, favored by 89% of the respondents. 63% in the same poll favored banning "military-style assault weapons," which I'm sure you also think a majority of Wisconsinites oppose.

Where did this "shaming" nonsense start? A person would think you were talking to a roomful of third graders, or maybe a convention of psychologists.

This has to be coming from someplace, because it just started appearing and it's not ordinarily part of political terminology. Ronald Reagan never complained about shaming, nor did Lyndon Johnson.
Who can find the earliest blog post that talks about shaming in a political context outside of a grade school election for class president?

Well put.

At least I'm not vapid and bland in my unawareness, I hope.

Perhaps you are venal.

You can just post a comment, Sandi. No need for a grandiose entrance.

How does anyone propose to effectively ban something that already exists by the millions in society? Pass a law, but what good would it do?

You are trying to put the proverbial cork back on the bottle after the Genie has escaped.

It would stop the bleeding. Every month these guns are legal hundreds of thousands more of them hit the streets. If we stop the sales now and allow those that already own them to keep them the likely hood they become a commodity and inexpensive and work their way into the hands of criminals decreases. There is no silver bullet to prevent these crimes just like there's no law that can be passed that will eliminate any crime but we certainly can do better than doing nothing.

Exactly. A ban on guns will be just as effective as the ban on cocaine/marijuana has been.

In both cases, there needs to more focus on the people involved and less focus on the objects being used.
