How long should a ban last?

Postby jjoyce » Mon Apr 01, 2013 2:53 pm

If a user is banned from TDPF or has his/her account deactivated, how long should it last?

I've always thought it should be forever or until someone else takes over moderating duties, whichever comes first. But I'm interested in hearing what the Forons have to say.

So who are considering unbannning, Genie or the Blue dude?

As there is absolutely no moderation on these forums to begin with, it would have to be something very egregious to warrant a ban. Therefore I would say at least a year, if not forever.

I was under the impression that accounts were deactivated rather than people banned. If I'm wrong about that, just say so...no big hu-hu.

I showed up mostly 'cause a buddy was talking about going to the Cart's festival and I mentioned that I should check and see if some old grudges are still being held before attending. At first it looks like they had been mostly forgotten...which makes sense: it's been five years...but I guess they ain't, eh?

I think the ban should be lifted upon payment of reparations.

I dunno, I'd probably make a terrible board administrator.

How've you been handling this so far? My impression is that:

(a) banning/deactivation is usually pretty rare; and
(b) as far as a particular username is concerned it's permanent; but
(c) if someone returns after a while under a slightly different name, you generally turn a blind eye as long as they don't cause trouble. (For example, I'm thinking of MadMind, who came back as "MadMind75" after being banned.)

Is that about right?

That all makes sense to me, I guess. People often will change over time, so I wouldn't assume that someone who was making things difficult around here years ago would still be a nexus for problems if they came back now.

Looking back, I think you and I got along worse than we really needed to, and I probably posted more than my share of juvenile insults and whatnot. I'm sorry about that.

3 years and 9 days sounds about right.

I go with the two weeks first time, forever for a second violation, but we all know this is moot, right?

Curious, what were Genie and Carol's "violations"? Were they ever given an "official" warning?

Forever's a long time.

I say bring them both back along with Blues.

We're all grownups here, able to gloss over that which we don't like.

Plus the overly-egregious posting publicly only helps the prosecution's case.

Given the level of egregious behavior that it would take to get banned, I suggest 3 months for first offense, permanent for the second. Two weeks strikes me as too mild. It should sting a bit.

When getting banned from this (or any) forum for 3 months "stings a bit", you might want to seek professional help.
