Walker fucks over the poor (again)

Postby Henry Vilas » Mon Mar 04, 2013 9:56 am

Walker wants new rent-to-own rules

Gov. Scott Walker's budget could mean new freedoms for the rent-to-own industry in Wisconsin.

Walker's proposed budget would make such businesses exempt from the Wisconsin Consumer Protection Act. That would mean they don't have to disclose their annual interest rates.

Industry lobbyists say their contracts aren't credit transactions so they shouldn't be subject to the act.

Rent-to-own opponents say the businesses prey on the poor with very high interest rates similar to payday lenders. They say forcing the industry to show customers what they would pay is a necessary safeguard.

What motivates Walker to make such a move?

Don't worry Hank. We already have Obama phones. Obama TVs can't be too far off.

Even Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) objects to Walker's proposal, calling rent-to-own a sleazy industry. The same Grothman pushed through "tort reform" that hinders renters from suing their landlords (he is also a landlord).

Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal to exempt rent-to-own companies from having to disclose interest rates to customers may end a long-fought battle for such businesses, who have spent close to $900,000 since 2003 lobbying state lawmakers on the issue.

From Isthmus

Nearly a billion bucks in bribes over the last decade.

Good question - seems like a more plausible/realistic move (as opposed to VP or President like some people say - too many skeletons there, and I think he's just smart enough to know it).

The rent-to-own thing is just a small part of it - scrutiny reveals a whole, actually-kind-of-funny supervillian list of businesses that Walker is in bed with, from mining to staffing agencies to, yes, our upstanding 'rent-to-own' neighbors and even payday loan providers.

Basically, if there is a business in our fine state that is screwing people, Walker is on the other side of the menage-a-trois. He's like a low rent version of Warren G. Harding, someone who'll "play ball". Most other politicians would get totally nailed for cozying up to the types Walker is, but frankly, he's made so much of a shitstorm with his other actions that the fog of war obscures this embarrassing portion of his behavior.

Yeah, ok, he said 'billion' where he should have said 'million.' Moving along...

Yes, I misspoke (actually miswrote). It was nearly a measly million bucks in bribes.

Now will anyone defend Walker's attempt to excuse the rent-to-own industry from normal credit disclosures and regulations?

Oh, You are referring to the 'Lifeline Phone' Program begun by the Reagan Administration, in 1984, as per the various communications acts enacted since the 30's by Congress. I was almost confused by reality.

Scott Walker plan allows rent-to-own contracts with blank spaces

Why is Scott Walker pushing 'rent-to-own' deregulation? His office won't say

"Hey, Fitz, have we fucked over the poor while rewarding corporate interests yet this week? No?"
