Walker spokeswoman Nicole Tieman says the money was needed to cooperate with authorities over the past year.

The high price of cooperation.

While it would have been cheaper to just do right the first time around, I have to note that in the world of big lawyering $40K is chicken feed.

The cynic in me is whispering in my ear that the $40k is to cover the token amount he is being charged by lawyers who are working for him off the books.

Why would lawyers be working for him off the books?

Why do people ever give freebies to politicians?

That's not an answer. Why would a law firm, whose only permanent interest is providing and charging for legal services, give away the only thing they have that has economic value? They have a client with deep, probably unlimited, pockets; why would they not take advantage of that?

Because they're "in on it".

Whatever "it" is.

Is a law firm required to reveal who's paying them?

As general rule, no. Only reason we know of these payments is campaign finance reports.

What would prevent, say the Koch Brothers, from slipping Walker's law firm a few tens of thousands extra?

This all subject to campaign finance laws. If Walker knew, would have to report; if he didn't know, what would be the point?

Unreported money and free legal representation with plausible deniability for the recipient? I can't imagine any advantages coming from that scenario.

So he can claim plausible deniability and receive more legal counsel than he paid for.

I wouldn't get too worked up over this $40k. Walker probably got a bill from his lawyers at the beginning of the year for the final quarter of 2012 and it has to be paid. Fighting off subpoenas and discovery from the Milwaukee Co. DA isn't cheap. While one would hope the John Doe is zeroing in on the weasel, things sure have been quiet:(

They may also have a permanent interest in receiving favorable treatment from the state government, or their principals may have an interest in promoting a political ideology. The reason to give away their services is because a conspicuously large legal budget would embarrass the Governor.

Why do we read every other week that some governor or other official has to reimburse a friend for some gift or other?
