Isthmus Be Election Day?

Postby Bland » Mon Nov 05, 2012 8:21 am

I've been seeing the "Isthmus Be Election Day!" banner for days now and it's finally bothered me enough to ask: What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is there a joke or reference I'm missing? I sincerely hope so because without one it looks and sounds amazingly stupid. Please, Isthmus - make me feel foolish for having to ask.

I believe it's a cute play on words. Isthmus=> "It must"

Thank you, brentron!

I sure am glad it means something but I refuse to feel foolish as that is one of the most tortured puns I've ever heard.

"Isthmus be the place" was an entry for a slogan contest, more years ago than I want to think about. I can't remember what slogan actually won but "Isthmus be the place" was everywhere for a long time after.

Isthmus be getting hard to come up with an election pun now that we've had a couple decades worth of non-stop coverage of them and an explosion of media entities vying for them.

Actually, it's an homage to Little Rascals...
"Can you use isthmus in a sentence?"
"Uh, isthmus be my lucky day!"
Hope Tuesday is our lucky day.

I'm famous for not getting jokes, and I'd have never gotten that one in a million years. I was thinking it meant something in Black English.

Isthmus actually used it in a marketing campaign back in the 80s. "If It's Thursday, Isthmus Be Madison."

Long-standing since 7 this morning? I wish all my headlines got this much attention.

Look what I found in the archive... vintage Metro bus, and the old busboard campaign.

I preferred the slogan encouraging subscriptions: "Why get it for free when you can pay for it?"

See I would have gotten that because there's additional context.

"Isthmus be election," on the other hand, doesn't correlate to an already familiar phrase. It just sounds wrong. I still vote thumbs dwon.
