I'm lukewarm on his stuff overall (some love, some hate, as others have expressed), but I can understand why some hate his music (as opposed to the personality, which I guess some also hate).
My big beef with him is that, by and large, his music is so dense that it sounds like he took every single idea he had at the time and threw it into each composition (with lots of exceptions). Much of it sounds complicated for complication's sake.
I saw Zappa Plays Zappa a year or so ago in Milwaukee (coming this year to the Barrymore on Dec. 8th). While I have the utmost respect for those musicians that, not only are able to perform the music but also memorize it all, the evening left me completely mentally exhausted. I was run over by a flood of notes all night that became meaningless after the first 45 minutes or so.
Maybe I just haven't gotten his underlying genius to a lot of the long and complicated material.
