Dirt disposal?

Postby Handy Smurf » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:46 am

I have a lot - about a pick-up truck load - of dirt to dispose of. This is our typical Madison heavy clay. The city yard waste disposal site and county composting sites won't take this stuff. Any suggestions?

I see that kind of thing on the freebie section of Craigslist pretty regularly. Seems like there's always somebody willing to take a load of fill off your hands, especially if you can deliver it.

Chances drop a bit if they have to come and get it but what the hell. Couldn't hurt to try.

You can ask if Homburg's facility on Milwaukee will take it. They were kind enough to rid me of a pickup bed-full of rocky soil from a garden reclamation project; the county site had just suspended acceptance of such materials in anticipation of some kind of expansion project on their grounds, or something.

You can take clean fill to the city landfill for free.
Take 12/18 East of Stoughton Road.
The entrance is across the road from the Yahara golf course.
They have limited open hours:

You have to drive it up the mountain of trash and negotiate all the giant loaders. It's sort of like driving to the moon. Take the kids, it's a trip.

Don't be so sure of that. That's where I went with my rocky soil, and was turned away.

We DO NOT ACCEPT any of the following materials:
•Brush (please check with your local municipality for proper disposal)
•Dirt
•Rocks
•Food Waste, including compostable paper and plastics
•Christmas wreaths or garlands (because of the metal wire)
•Animal manure or pet waste
•Trash of any sort

They're trying to prolong the life of the landfill, so filling it with clean dirt is likely a low priority.

Have you tried calling landscaping companies and asking if they want a load of clean fill for free?

The giant city landfill on 12/18?
I have taken fill there several times.
Unless they've changed their policy in the last few years?

I called the landfill.
She said, "We used to take dirt, but we aren't taking it right now."
I asked who would take it, and she responded, "I have no idea."
So yeah, very helpful.
I suggest you fill your brown refuse cart half full of that dirt every week until it's gone.
Really stick it to the man.
