Yes, I have been in the middle class most of my life. There was a decade or so of surviving poverty as a young adult. But within a few years of finally getting my BS from UW, I was able to live above the poverty line. This raise above the poverty line means that I made more money than the very basic necessities, rent, food, utilities, and items to keep clean.
Now, I would guess that I am upper middle class. My husband says we are rich. Which compared to most people in the world, we are. Our combined income last year was about $125,000. The more money we make, the more we donate to social causes. Does that make us socialists?
Which reminds me, it's the time of year to write my donation checks. Even though the drought has cut into our output on our farm, we are fortunate that my husband has a good job off the farm.
