The Onion in Hot Water

Postby pjbogart » Fri Aug 03, 2012 10:29 pm

So apparently the otherwise respected and respectful "The Onion" has received a small bit of criticism for its depiction of a plane flying into the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, with the caption, "Sears Extremists Fly Plane Into Willis Tower."

Too soon? Tasteless? Not exactly uncharacteristic for The Onion. I mean, really, The Onion wouldn't be The Onion if they showed much restraint and it's been 11 years, which is quite a bit of restraint for them.

So, what are your favorite tasteless Onion headlines? Here are some that stood out for me:

Jenna Bush’s Federally Protected Wetlands Now Open for Public Drilling (during Bush's ANWR drilling controversy).

German Jews Concerned about Hitler’s ‘Kill All Jews’ Proposal

Anna Nicole Smith Finally Reaches Target Weight (with a picture of Anna Nicole Smith and a picture of a grave. Published about a month after her death in 2007).

Probably my favorite is the one (before they went national) that had Governor Tommy Thompson declare October "Masturbation Month." When he tried to shut them down, they ran a retraction "correcting" his declaration to "Pederasty Month." Thompson rather wisely shut up at that point, something that he's not really known for doing.

comedy isn't pretty

just as long as they don't go after Larry Craig & his wide stance - that goes too far.
