Mildred's

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Mildred's

Postby Fat.The.Gangster » Tue Apr 17, 2012 1:10 pm

I was saddened to learn that Nels Nelson, long the proprietor of Mildred's Sandwich Shop, passed away recently. Nels was a kind man who made fantastic sandwiches. He will be missed.

Wow.

Very sad news.

Nels was one of the kindest people I've ever known.

I used to work on the 800 block of E. Johnson and loved going to Mildred's for lunch. Is the place still there? Haven't been down E. Johnson for a long time.

Thanks, I just saw a small article in last Sunday's paper saying that it will re-open. Looks like I'll have to head over to the east side soon.

Not yet, they were cleaning up last week and doing some prep. They haven't given us a concrete date yet other than "soon."

I'm really happy they decided to reopen. Nels made all the soups, so someone else is going to have to bust open his recipe book and take the reigns.

Monday...

MILDRED’S TO REOPEN

Mildred’s Sandwich Shop at 827 E. Johnson St. is set to open more than a month after the death of Nels Nelson, who owned the restaurant for 36 years and died of heart failure April 1 at age 62.

His sister, Dianne Nelson, who lives in Winona, Minn., took over the business and will split her time between Madison and Winona.

Mildred’s should reopen Monday, said employee Patrick Starks.

While Dianne Nelson has taken over the business’ finances, Starks and Mildred’s other three employees have been working to get the restaurant spiffed up and rejuvenated.

“We’re going to keep the menu the same and reopen and give everybody their Mildred’s back. That’s the plan right now,” he said.

I don't think they know what the hell they're doing down there.

Lights were on, but not a single person in the joint. Like, anywhere.

What say you new owners?

Open for business or still a work in progress?

Nice article about Nels in the recent neighborhood newsletter. See page 6 of Tenney-Lapham newsletter

When I worked downtown, about 15 years ago, Mildred's Sandwich Shop was incredible. I hope the new owners or whomever is running the joint get up to speed soon. They made great lunches.
