Words that have lost their meaning

Postby jjoyce » Wed May 23, 2012 11:27 am

Epic comes to mind. You can't really refer to, say, a burrito as "epic," but I've heard it done this week.

Forgot is another, but in a different way. I don't think anyone ever hears the word "forgot" and thinks, well, this person had all the best intentions and it simply slipped his mind. Instead, they think "Flake."

Reminds me of a Louis CK skit...

The word amazing has lost all value imo. I cringe when it slips out of my mouth because I hear it so often.

Unique. I constantly hear people saying "very unique" or "somewhat unique." The word unique cannot be modified. It's either unique or it isn't.

Now don't get me going on alot (sic) again.

I'm afraid you're not going to like this, then.

Interesting.

The ultimate passive-aggressive tool.

Literally has lost its meaning. I love the Oatmeal's take on this: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/literally

This is an amazing thread.

"Sort of" kills me. it's the new "uh" or LOL.

"Absolutely" when substituted for "yes." As in, "excuse me, could you refill my water?" "ABSOLUTELY!"

"Wonderful" when used for things that are merely nice. Does that "wonderful" iced tea really fill you with a sense of wonder?

Actually, I think a large number of our supremely positive adjectives have been watered down to mundane levels.
