It was either the Nook Color, which I hacked so that it's a full-blown Android tablet, or the Internet-enabled Blu-ray player. Both have pretty much transformed the way I consume media of all kinds.

Best purchase: A middle eastern rug from Stony Hill Antiques. Beautiful colors, unique design, I never get tired of looking at it.

Best deal: On craigslist, a basically new Bosch Finecut power handsaw for $50. The guy threw in a very used but perfectly working Bosch belt sander too. That's like $350 worth of tools.

Brill push lawnmower.

I've used push (manual) lawnmowers all my life and this one is the best. It stays sharp, and it's very light and easy to use. I kept the old Sears one just in case but I haven't taken it out once since I got the little Brill.

Airline tickets to visit my 91-year-old dad in the Phoenix area.

If this question is asked next year I hope to say the same.

Either the skylight or the vasectomy. But here's a tip for the rest of you--don't use the same contractor for both purchases like I did. The swelling around the skylight didn't go down for a week, costing me a fortune in ice, and the vasectomy went way over budget thanks to problems with the subcontractors.

The three hens who provide eggs every day. The rooster, not so much, but he does protect his girls. So I will forgive his cockiness.

Front suspension fork for my single speed mountain bike. I've been riding it sans any suspension for years, and I never imagined the world of difference it would make.

That hit that I put out on Dick Clark. Best five grand I ever spent.

I was starting to think that fucker couldn't die, but then I met this guy late at night at the Pine Cone who said he knew a guy...
