2012 Olympics

Postby Kenneth Burns » Mon May 07, 2012 1:12 pm

Are you looking forward to the 2012 Olympics, July 27-Aug. 12? Are you preparing? I'm mindful of them as I make summer vacation plans.

Ms Vilas and I were considering the UK (along with stops in Ireland and Paris and/or Normandy) for our next big vacation, but with the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, prices go up and availability down. So maybe next year, when Ms V plans to retire.

I''ll watch the track and field events on me telly.

In 2008 I subscribed to an absurdly expensive cable package, and that meant I was able to watch a wonderful variety of Olympics programming -- the flagship NBC broadcasts, the basic-cable stuff on MSNBC, CNBC, etc., and especially the terrific coverage on Universal HD. I was an Olympics junkie. My setup is more modest this time, though there is the promise of extensive online coverage.

The NBC Sports Network replaced the old Versus channel earlier this year. It'll be interesting to see how the new network is deployed in London. Apparently the focus will be team sports.

I understand why NBC emphasizes gymnastics, swimming, and track and field in its big-time broadcast coverage. Those are exciting, dramatic events -- and Americans do well in them, so American viewers like to watch them. But I'm glad more obscure events are shown on cable. I got big thrills in 2008 watching badminton and archery on Universal HD.

What is this summer crap? I'm looking forward to the next real Olympics, Feb. 7-23, 2014.

NPR:

For the 2012 London Games, NBC plans to stream video of all 302 Olympic events, allowing online viewers to choose what they want to watch. Fans will have options for watching broad highlights, or following one discipline's events.

But:

To get full access, you must be a cable or satellite subscriber. And you'll need a user ID and password from your TV provider to log in...

I watch PGA Tour golf for the same reason many people, I suspect, watch the Olympics, which I also adore. It's an opportunity to look at attractive, physically fit people.

With the controversy over U.S. Olympics uniforms being made in China, some are suggesting that athletics wear what was worn in the original Olympics... their birthday suits. Don't know if that would help performances, but TV viewership would hit record levels.
