Back to fairy tales (I’m such an idealist). I’d rather be the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz
than any princess or image of beauty that is waiting for her knight in shining armor to rescue her and take care of her for the rest of her life. Look up the scarecrow before you judge me. Don’t get me wrong, I like romance as much as the next person. Visiting the city of love is on my bucket list!
I’ll admit I don’t have a lot of degrees after my name. Would I like to go to grad school? Yes, but do I even know what for? No. But I do know that a lot of intelligent people lack common sense and perspective. Am I guilty myself sometimes? Sure, but I’m working on it, and I’m willing to see it. Call me out on it anytime, please; but not with any presupposed inferences about me, especially ones that are not there or intended. And I’ll try to do that for you.
I like to think critically and abstractly, about many things, including my own ideas. What insecurities do I have that I’m defending by not seeing the bigger picture? How am I losing (or what am I missing out on) by holding on to those stereotypes? What inferences am I putting on the speaker that may or may not be there, whether it’s Obama, Gingrich, or my neighbor?
What are my prejudices? I’m against big corporations and the foothold they have on our society. Why? Because as a small business person I got burned. About one third of my yearly earnings were wiped out due to a corporate takeover.
I’m also biased against the GOP because I don’t think their policies have the best interest of the country in mind. I think their back pockets do. That’s not to say I don’t take a critical eye to the Democratic Party for their financial interests, but I think overall the democrats do have the best interest of the country in mind. But that’s how I see it. There are things about the right I do respect, such as their focus on the individual. But should the interpretation of those individual rights trump the good of the people as a whole?
I guess it depends on who is doing the interpreting of those fundamental rights.
Perspective is everything. So call me out when I make a gaffe, please. I choose to learn from my mistakes. I probably won't stop treadjacking though.
