"State officials maintain that they didn't have the necessary funds to draw down the federal money, but that doesn't make much sense when you consider that the Legislature found some $200 million in tax breaks to hand out to corporations."
The biggest chunk of federal money turned down by the state was the more than $800 million grant for a high-speed rail system [...] According to data from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, which the Budget Project used for its report, the Legislature passed on four major federal funding sources: about $480 million for Medical Assistance; $13.2 million for job training for people with disabilities; $8.3 million for enforcing child support orders; and $4.2 million for administering FoodShare and Medical Assistance programs.
So aside from rail, the losers in this refusal of federal funding are the neediest among us.
Thanks a lot, Governor Dumbass. You truly are turning us into Wississippi.
