A vast majority of the Mexican places in Madison are either cheap and mediocre or expensive and mediocre. La Mestiza downtown was better and similarly priced than Laz Cazuelas, and certainly better than utterly horrific piles of feces like Frida's. It had a few items that were quite good. It was certainly uneven in quality but at least the chips and salsa were both free and very good - bucking the recent trend here to charge for both.
All of the other places pimped on TDPF have been disappointing to me thus far. I've basically given up trusting the taste of this forum when it comes to Mexican food because people seem to have orgasmic reactions to food I find no better than what I can cook just by following a 30 minute recipe at home.
I also don't get the reverse-snobbery that declares that Mexican food must be cheap and simple; restaurants in Mexico run the gamut of price, style, and sophistication, yet seemingly all people want here is equivalent to the road-side cart experience; they disdain anything else.
I had one really great meal at Cilantro that gave me hope we might start having quality Mexican here as can be found in Chicago and Milwaukee; but then the next two meals were quite bad there.
I'll probably try Fancisco's since it's really close to my work and the OP doesn't claim it is anything beyond "DECENT."
