barney: yes. take comfort.
fennel: he's still with us, and he seems to be pleased with the situation.

Yeah, I remember Fur, Fin, Feather. I'm trying to remember what was on the right side of Ragstock in the 70's. I thought the original Telus Mater was where Gap is now.

Yes, Fur Fin and Feather was definitely there.

When Ragstock was remodeling to take over the left-hand 1/3 of the building (from the facade, it appears to be all one building, at least), sometime in the last 10 years, they took off part of the facade and revealed a sign, silver on black, that said "SINGER" in a font that resembled the sewing machine company's logo. I'm guessing there was once a sewing machine store there?

I thought Zaritas was further up State. I thought there was a Zaritas that later became a "peep" shop for a number of years.

Many many years ago Ragstock was home to a Sherwin Williams store and, yes, Singer Sewing Machine Company:

Where was the clothing store Vesuvius, in the mid 80's? I used to go in there in a vain attempt at becoming a chick magnet (80's hair and acne had other plans for me).

I think the owner had some pretty good 80's hair himself. If I remember right he later opened a tea room on the square and then was tragically murdered in it.

Zaritas and Mall Books coexisted in the Overture block. Zaritas was replaced by Deb & Lola's. Liked D&L's, but I really missed the Zaritas combo burrito, best hangover food ever. Mall Books succumbed to Mary Lang-Sollinger's disapproval, and Radical Rye moved into the space. After that, Overture, I think.

You could check old City Directories to confirm this, but I think that what was in the current Ragstock space was the original, much more spacious Tellus Mater. It had racks and racks of modern design items, Scandinavian glassware, stemware, cookware.

For some reason it downsized and moved up State Street to its current location.
