I lived above the Pub in the early 80s, my first domicile after leaving the parents' nest. For me, it was thrilling to be living on State Street, in the heart of the action, so to speak. I didn't necessarily patronize the Pub that often, though (Hearing the music from their juke box coming up through the floor was enough for me). A few memories:

- In 1981 when Oui Magazine profiled the student clowns of the Pail & Shovel Party, a magazine-signing party was held at the Pub, with Leon Varijan (the lead clown) sigining copies of the magazine. The local feminists staged a picket outside the place, chanting "PORN IS THE THEORY - RAPE IS THE PRACTICE!" I may be wrong, but I think Oui magzine is kaput (or maybe it's just publisher Bob Guccione).

- You could set your watch to bartime by the sound of drunks spilling out in the street. The #1 song sung by drunken students on State Street? "We're off to See the Wizard."

- Once everyone was outa there, they would put the picnic tables up on end and use a hose to powerspray the floors, directing the flotsam to a few drains in the floor/ You gotta love a place like that.

- And, in keeping with this holiday season, I once passed the Pub one November and saw that there was a huge gathering of Santas in there, drinking and slapping each other on the back. I remember cursing the fact that I didn't have a camera handy, cuz it was quite a sight, with Santas packed to the front windows.

Technically, The Pub was my first experience with the "Madison live-music scene" back in 1996. Pretty sure the band was Sunshine Allison.

Double trouble. Apparently they are also opening one in Milwaukee.

I died a little bit just now.
I loved sitting in the window getting drunk and watching people.
50 year-olds still wearing their high school letter jackets and a big Goody comb thrusting out from their back jeans pocket.
Strong drinks, weak drunks, and air hockey.
Drugs upstairs.

I never held up cards (please) but I enjoyed watching a bunch of guys glue quarters on the sidewalk and dissolved into schoolgirl laughter at anyone's futile attempts to pick them up.
Then a ancient street guy wandered by, tried to get a coin but couldn't. The boys laughed. The old guy reached into his pocket and pulled out a screwdriver and proceeded to pry up about 5 bucks before the boys got cranky.

Good times.

I must have been sitting right there in the window with you, because I remember the quarter trick. Filthiest men's room in Madison. Dollar Blatz were the best buy in town.

You can drink on my porch. I'll set up some chairs and a radio. Maybe get a smaller guy to act as bouncer, but since it's cold out we'll call him a cooler. Call it the Double Douche. My asshole neighbor that looks like Terry Funk will probably be a problem though.

The Pub actually was remodeled, and when I came home from work, the music was so loud & clear I couldn't believe it, & I knew when I went upstairs to my apt, It Wouldn't hardly register. Awesome.
Then it got worse, and worse; After awhile the owner said some punk had brought in 4 1000 watt subwoofers & hid them under the stage instead of removing them. That punk was apparently DJ Whitehorse. Then the pub closed, & Whiskey River(Jacks) Saloon Opened.
Guess What? 4 1000 watt subwoofers. Our teeth were vibrating.
We spent a year trying to get something done about it. We are still trying. Those bastards have rendered our apts virtually uninhabitable most of the time. Gus Paras Owns the place, I thought he was a bit smarter than to lose tenants because of some dickwad with an unhealthy obsession for subwoofers.
He apparently TRUSTED them, but didn't get anything in writing?
The Pub was notorious for the worst sound system in town, Now we got mr. whitehorse & his notions of sound reproduction, which consists of bass, more bass, and bass. Who would want to re-create the Pubs blown sound system?
Dj Whithorse is a dj & I'm Mother Teresa.
They played the same setlist for over a year! 7 nights a week.
Then the cover band would duplicate it on weekends. Sick. Like a time warp. Like someone passed out on acid listening to the hits of the 80's.

Now, sun, mon, are not driving us screaming into the streets, but karaoke tues, ride the bull wed, whatever loudnoise thur,Fri,Sat, is same cover band, same setlist since they opened.
And this whitehorse guy, yells into a micrphone that is easily twice as loud as neccesary for 5 or 6 hours a night. He's 'The MC' like
cheer captain. Sounds like a stupid drunk freshman who failed as a carnival barker.
They turned down the worst of the volume, that is BASS for a few months, but now have inched it back up little by little as if we don't notice. I guess volume & Bass are interchangeable.
Right now my room, and everything in it is basicaly vibrating and rattling, as usual. I mean, Ya'll know what a boom-car sounds like?
Try living above a giant boom-semi.
My rent is somewhat grandfathered in and I honestly can't afford to move.
I'm stuck, so are a bunch of others here too.
Some lived here for 20+ years, & they can't stand it anymore.
We were given an email addy to send complaints directly to the dj, can't imagine why, he responded to me, '96 decibels on the dance floor, well within our limit' (What? Whose? What limit?)
It's not the volume, it's sub-sonic bass that's killing us.
Can I sue this bar for damaging my hearing?
I thought Madison had noise ordinances, I mean this is in fact a public health issue, not to mention gee, affordable housing? if you
can stand real hearing damage? We sometimes have to actually leave it's so bad. When you can FEEL your eardrums, your being damaged.
I was born here in 1963 & up til now the worst thing was some nut blowing up my dad's office before he was done using it.
I understand this bar is owned by some investment group out of Mineapolis, I don't know, Loudmouth whitehorse down there to top it off owns a company of his own & the little shits rich, apparently. Maybe he's an investor/owner.
We've had cops up here to experience what is was like, & they agreed it was beyond redicullous, but nothing they could do.
"It's a bar" they say. ALRC? No Help. Gus? No Help. City of Madison? NO HELP! Fuck this town.
I never thought I'd say that.
Thanks. Had to get it off my chest.
