"new" album radio

Postby jjoyce » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:29 pm

Remember when it was illegal to spin an entire record on the radio? Some stations would spin an entire side, I seem to recall.

In any case, entire albums are showing up on NPR.org/music. Am I late to the party on this? Today, for instance, Broken Social Scene and The Hold Steady both have their new albums available for streaming.

WORT used to play the "New Disk at Nine" at 9pm several days a week. I don't recall if they played the whole thing or just a side at a time.

NPR.org has been making entire albums available for a while now -- can't tell you how long, but not just a few weeks. I like their selections, too. Usually it's a link-in with an interview or feature they aired. They are trying very hard to connect their on-air world with their web services in an effort to attract a younger demographic, and I think they're doing a decent job.

Otis Hart of WNYC and http://www.dustedmagazine.com/ was just hired away by NPR, and will settle in there mid May. That should further improve things.

The Wilson Brothers play all of (or as much as the FCC will allow, usually due to content issues) a new or reissued record every Tuesday at 9pm on WORT. I have no idea if they stream this part of the show--I assume they don't due to the Digital Millennium Act but locally they do broadcast it. How does a website get away with streaming when WORT can't?

I don't know if it was ever "illegal" to spin an entire album on the radio. When I was in high school in the sixties WRPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) in Troy used to do it all the time especially the overnight jocks (Firesign Theatre was a favorite). They weren't commercial, of course.

When I moved to Chicago in '77 the NBC FM station WKQX used to play and entire album every night at 11 - one side, flip - the other side. That was youngster Bob Pittman's format who went on to create MTV. I still have a cassette or two from those days. The radio compression made the sound bad but I wound up buying some of those albums.
