Sharon Jones!

Did anyone get the new Sharon Jones CD yet?

For those of you that are familiar with her, it may not come as a shock that it's awesome.

And, as usual, it hits a bit different segment of vintage soul than the others. The early Detroit-esque girl group numbers are not a direction I would have expected.

Mini - have you checked out Black Joe Lewis? That's a different (but still pretty awesome) take on vintage soul (of a more Texan variety).

Phish, like them or not, had the good sense to hire Sharon Jones (and Saundra Davis) for backup vocal duties on their Halloween 2009 cover of Exile on Main Street. I was apprehensive about posting this, as I am sure most of you wouldn't like it, but a little research into the horn section prompted a question.

Phish hired one of the Dap-Kings, Dave Guy, for trumpet duties, David Smith for trombone, and someone named Tony Jarvis for saxophone. Google told me someone with that name has Wisconsin connections, and even played in the Tar Babies, "a seminal avant-punk outfit in the mid-'80s". Is it the same Tony Jarvis?
