Juno was released in 2007... barely; December 25th 2007, but still, 2007 nonetheless.

While I agree the 1982 list you have provided is impressive and in all likelihood will blow away any 2008 list, keep in mind many of the best films of any year are released near the end of the year - Award Season.

It's a different world, a different audience, and a different market economy.

Movies from 1982 talk like this, movies from 2008 talk like this.

Seems to me that if the original poster's list is supposed to represent the "cream" of 1982 cinema, then 1982 was a pretty shitty year for films too (which doesn't surprise me at all, as I've suspected for a long time that the '80s was one of the worst decades for film.)

But even given that I can only find 7 or 8 decent films on that list, what's with what's not included? No 48 Hrs.? No Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid? No Eating Raoul? No Tootsie? Don't like to laugh? Or is it that you just don't know how (or why), as your inclusion of Porky's would seem to indicate... And how could you include nearly every other fantasy/horror film and forget about Q: The Winged Serpent?

Sorry to be such a curmudgeon, but... I mean, really? Death Wish II? As an example of what was good about a year of films? Puh-leaze.

Ever hear that Randy Travis song "1982"? It's killer.

Actually, DMR, I'm curious what compelled you to use a list of movies released in '82 to compare to those of '08? Did you happen to be looking at a list of 82 movies and come to that conclusion, or were you looking at other early 80s releases and felt '82 was the best representation?

I'm not sharp enough to recall years of film releases more than 5 years old. It is an interesting topic to consider what years were the best/worst for film in the past couple decade and where 2008 will sit in that ranking.

By the way, IMDb lists Das Boot as being released in 1981, not '82

No point in over-analyzing it, really. I was just making an offhand comment about mankind's crisis of creativity in the latter half of the first 1/10th of the 21st century.

Bonnie and Clyde vs. Dracula. heh.
