I still see a lot of official stationery with "Ave" instead of the newer "Av".

Here is a helpful little tool if you are having trouble with an acronym. Anybody remember LSMFT?

I hate myself for this: LSMFT isn't an acronym.

First letters of "Lucky Strikes mean fine tobacco." That would be an acronym.

Down at Quali-Temps LSMFT stands for "lazy, stupid mother-fucking temp".

It would be... if you looked at LSMFT and thought, "Ah, loosmooft."

NATO is an acronym. So's WEAC. FBI is not.

Tell me you didn't teach English.

Acronym /= abbreviation.

Just because the acronym for a thing can be pronounced as if it were a word (NATO, WEAC, NAFTA, etc.) does not mean it isn't still an acronym. The previous examples are no less acronyms than FBI, CIA, IRS, or CNN.

Y'all keep your acronyms out of my abbreviation thread, IYKWGFY. 'Kay?

Right. The fact that it can be pronounced as a word is what makes it an acronym.

Henry, you can cite all the lazy "also:" definitions you like to suggest that acronym can stand in for initialism, but that doesn't make it right. (Just like "impact" as a fucking verb. It's correct these days... but it ain't right.)
