Pug Mahones

Postby christopher_robin » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:26 am

Opening soon in the space where JT Friendly's darkened the neighborhood at East Wash and Baldwin: Pug Mahones.

Is this a chain? Will this be another fake Irish bar? Will it attract the same strange and grungy element? Who has the dirt?

There's also a band with the same name. It's all a bit confusing and potentially disturbing.

Either the bar or the band could change their name to Pug Cajones.

The folks who run the Old Town Pub are putting that together. It's not a chain. Pug Mahone is Gaelic for kiss my ass, roughly speaking, which is why the Pogues are called the Pogues (and presumably why the Kissers, originally a Pogues cover band, are called the Kissers).

I'm told.

Open for one week today, I believe. My take on it:

"Pug Mahones aims to cut through the gentrification of the Willy Street area and provide a clean and hospitable bar where you can watch the game on a big-screen TV, order a Bud on tap, eat a bacon sandwich or a burger, and unwind a little bit after a hard day at work."

Couple of the players at our poker game went on Friday night, liked the cheap beer scene. Is the food any good?

It's bar food, very deliberately straightforward. It's almost beyond comment, really--these are not the greatest burgers and BLTs the world has ever seen, but the price is right and the kitchen is clean.

You may want to do a little fact checking before you spew B.S. about JT's Friendly...JT's Friendly was a great neighborhood bar that the current owners of Pug Mahones frequented quite often! JT's customers I'm sure take offense to you saying that it darkened the neighborhood! Customers were treated to great food and great people when visiting JT's and for you to state otherwise proves you are completely clueless!

I was sorry to see JT's go, and also the barber shop.

Ken and Shirley were awesome.

I went in there to get my haircut, and commented to Ken about the signed picture of Garbage he had up on the wall.

Ken got really excited. "Oh, that Shirley Manson is a real nice girl," he said. "I know people think she's all wild and everything, but every time I've met her she's been a real lady."

Some friends and I went there the other night and we were throughly not impressed. We were charged anywhere from 3.50 to 4.00 for pints of island wheat and shandy (which there wasnt consistancy in pricing when one person and another ordered.)
It does look nicer in there and has potential. The drink specials are ok, but there was something about it that seemed off... Maybe I was still hung up on the old JTs and couldnt let go...

JT Friendly's sucked, and Pug Mahones sucks, too. Sleazy atmosphere, rude bartenders, trashy clientele. Icky. I gave them a shot, though...
