White Bikes

Postby ex-madisonian » Wed Jun 27, 2007 10:23 am

Reading the story about Community Cars and car sharing, I was reminded of the White Bike experiment in 1966 or 1967, I think it was.

A group bought junky old bikes at police auctions, painted them white and left them around central Madison. The idea was, anybody could take one and leave it at the destination for the next user.

But human nature took over, and if i recall, most were stolen or vandalized.

Anybody else remember?

I heard that the bikes (the original whites one, the newer red ones, and the lesser known blue ones) were absconded and refurbished, and are currently being used by merry bands of ice cream peddlers infiltrating the Madison area.

The white bikes are for loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no parking on the red bikes.

The red bikes have always been for loading and unloading. There is never stopping on a white bike.

Don't you tell me which bikes are for loading, and which bikes are for unloading.

Look Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again. There's just no stopping in a white zone.

I cheated

Don't be bike racists. I would expect this from Chubby or Fat.

I actually DO remember the white bikes, but never mind.

Most of 'em wound up in Lake Mendota, ridden there by drunken frat boys. Nothing's changed in 40 years.

The red bikes should really be green, just to be sanctimonious.
