Are you ready for 48 fps?

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is being shot at 48 frames per second instead of the regular 24. The UW's David Bordwell: "Opinion on the Hobbit footage was divided. Some theatre owners and operators were happy with it, but others were uneasy. The higher frame rate tends to eliminate motion blur and create a sharpness that recalls, for some viewers, the brittle look of HD sports broadcasts."

I'm reminded of the old Showscan process Douglas Trumbull devised. Its standard is 60 frames per second. It was mainly used for thrill rides.
