Away We Go

Postby swiss missile » Mon Jun 29, 2009 3:53 pm

I guess I shouldn't have relied on the snip-its of praise in the ads for this movie as unbiased reviews. While this wasn't a terrible film and did have a few funny moments, overall it wasn't very good. I couldn't say I really ever cared about the main characters and found their choice of friends pretty bizarre. Also, the scenes that were intended to pull on the heart strings were just awkward and somewhat ridiculous. And on the nitpicky side, part of the film supposedly takes place in Madison, but would fool no local, particularly the scene with a stucco-sided motel that was obviously shot somewhere warm and dry.

I couldn't disagree more.
This film is original, witty, sweet and thoughtful.
I laughed out loud, my wife cried, we give it two huge thumbs up.
Loved it.

Why would anyone ever do such a thing in the age of Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes?

I've loved Maya Rudolf since she was in The Rentals.

I'll see this movie.

Yes, I should've done more research beforehand, but a lot of reviewers did like it. I guess the LA Times and Time magazine assessments were more in line with my own.

Wow. So I emailed a friend who I knew saw the movie this weekend to ask her opinion to see if I was way off base in my lack of appreciation for the movie. Here was her response:

Anybody who loved "Away we go" needs his or her head examined. It had its funny moments, but on the whole, it wasn't worth the $8.50 I paid to see it at Sundance. About one quarter of the way, I was ready to leave. How could a movie directed by Sam Mendes and featuring so many good actors be so bad?

If having a cardboard window is a sign of being "fucked up," the movie's writer, director and actors need to broaden their lives and experiences. And that was one of the biggest weaknesses of that movie - how very unrelatable it was. And it was clichéd, smug and just mean about every character except the main ones.

That is my humble opinion about this ridiculously bad movie.

I thought the main couple reminded me of all the couples I knew who lived on Spaight or Jenifer Street in the '70s and the so-called Madison couple reminded me of super-rich spoiled campuses like Stanford or super new-age campuses like UC-Santa Cruz. On the other hand, a friend of mine here said one mother in her group goes her kid's kindergarten every day to breast-feed him. So maybe it's more like Madison West Side.
