Anyone know how to contact Netflix?

Postby Prof. Wagstaff » Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:55 am

I have searched high and low on the Netflix website to find an e-mail address and have come up empty. They do have a phone number, but why the hell should I have to call an internet business? Web-based businesses without online contact info baffle me.

Anyway, I simply want to find out why a particular disc (Disc 1 of The Shield) has been listed as "very long wait" for over 6 months now. I find it hard to believe that there is really that much demand and so few copies, so I suspect they're unaware of this and I just wanted to drop them a quick e-mail. So, any other users on here ever needed to contact Netflix on a matter of absolutely no urgency?

I've called them 3+ times over the years and they have usually been calls re: me being throttled. Typically, I get the movies I was waiting for pretty soon after (to be honest I threatened to quit Netflix on most of these calls).

Move it to the top of your queue.

I had a movie I was terribly excited to see, but although it was in the #1 spot and said it was available now, they sent me my #2 spot movies twice. Then I got an unexpected email apologizing that the film hadn't been available in my local shipping center. They sent it to me for free, in addition to the other movies I had out. I thought that was pretty snazzy of them.

So move it up. Once it trips their automatic triggers a time or two, they'll pay attention. Worth a try.

It's been at the top of my queue. For six months. That's my issue.
It's been listed as "very long wait" since the day I added it.

My advice is moot, my experience irrelevant. I retreat, humbled, into the ranks of the head-scratching bewildered.

(Bonus advice you already know and don't wanna hear: 1. Rent it elsewhere and return to Netflix for subsequent discs 2. Download it. 3. Give up and re-watch The Wire instead.)

Yeah that's on my list of shows to plow through. Now that seasons are mostly wrapping up its time to dig into those shows I just missed for whatever reason. Haven't heard anything but great things about The Wire. Although we still have a couple of discs of Freaks and Geeks and Trailer Park Boys to get through.

its on a long wait because anyone who wants to watch the show is going to start with the first disc of the first season, its probably one of the most queue'd discs they've got.

I think the "rent elsewhere" option is sound and then just come back for season 2. hell for $10-15 you could probably buy the whole first season from pre-played.

Have you tried taking it off your queue for a day or so, then putting it back on at #1?

Failing that, have you tried putting an old dog turd with the message GIMME DISC SIX YOU ROTTEN BASTARDS tied to it into a red envelope and mailing it back?

Oh, how I've wanted to start a similiar thread on numerous occasions...but I made a resolution to cut back on initiating complaint discussions. Thank you so much Prof. Wagstaff for starting this topic.

I've been having the same issues with netflix... but with multiple films. Yes, alot of them are new releases...but many of them are not. At one time I have had 10 movies at the top of my queue, for weeks on end, all labeled anywhere from short wait to long wait to very long wait.

My roomate, who has his own Netflix account has added the exact same movies to the top of his queue and he gets them in days. I've called 3 times in 2 months. Their customer service people, while very polite and apologetic, are powerless to reconcile the situation. The first 2 times I called I was told it was a very complex "algorithym" that determines why some people would get a movie soon and some don't. The third time I called, I was told that the more movies I have sent to me in a given month, the less likely they will put me on priority to get the movies I've been waiting on. I find this information especially annoying considering Netflix's whole selling point is that you get as many movies as you want for one price...and now here's a customer service rep persuading me not to send my movies back so soon. Also, even if you are obtaining more movies, you have obviously displayed a history of returning them much sooner. I'd really like to get my hands on this algorithm so I can suggest to them how to tweak it.

Anyway, what I've eventually done, and has worked is: delete all movies in your queue aside from your top 5-10 choices. Doing this kind of sucks but it is the only way I have been able to get new releases, first seasons of television programs, and obscure titles in a timely matter.

you know whats worse than Netflix? Gamefly. I pack the list with games I want to play and they send me a 20th pick. this wouldn't be so annoying if they had a shipping center closer than California. It takes 3 days for them to get my game, and 3 days for them to send one back.

Its known that Netflix punishes those who cycle through lots of movies in a given month. they're trying to slow your ass down because you're costing them money. the subscriber who makes netflix money is the one who gets a movie and then sits on it for 4-6 weeks before finally watching it and sending it back. those are the ones that make running such an operation profitable. the 3 movies a week crowd are Netflix biggest cheerleaders, but Netflix is also spending more money sending you movies each month than you pay for a subscription.

also the selling point of the service is unlimited rentals and no late fees. they say nothing about selection being guaranteed.

Is anyone using the Netflix streaming on XBox 360 or their PC? 30 Rock in HD on demand! hundreds of movies and shows! I sometimes sit on discs because I go through whole series watching on xbox.

No Shield on streaming yet though.

These are very valid points but I question the theory that a loyal long time, 3 movie a week customer is actually costing them money. Of course they are making less profit on someone like myself than the guy sitting on his movies for weeks on end - But then also, that same guy could be holding onto a high demand new release, and with enough "ideal customers" doing that, it could only force Netflix into a situation where they have to purchase more copies from the distributer or label additional customer's queues with "very long wait" for that title. Likely, a combination of these two things take place which in turn costs Netflix more money and/or upsets more longstanding customers.

When I started with the service I had none of these queue issues in the first year, despite the same usage. At that time I was recommending Netflix to just about anyone I talked to about movies. Nowadays, not so much.

Again, I have no clue on their precice determination over who waits for a movie and who does not, nor can I claim I have a superior business model for them - It's just that there is a bit too large of a discrepancy from the initial service I got. My roomate rotates movies a bit less than me, but not that much. I can have a movie at the top of my queue months before its release date and still not get it 3 months after it's been released- my roomate will add it and it ships next day.
Really, at the very least I wish they could give you some sort of visible rank so you at least know what is coming next before it's sent - expecting a nephew to visit for the weekend, having a list of appropriate material at the top of your queue, only to find out that Scarface and The Exorcist shipped out on Thursday.
I won't be surprised when the day comes that Netflix starts offering automatic added fees to request a hold on long wait films.

Thanks for all the advice, folks!
I have tried everything suggested (except for the dog turd... sorry, BP, I only have ready access to cat turds) -- so far nothing has worked, but I remain hopeful now that I've pretty much emptied my queue.

That said, isn't anyone else disturbed by the lack of a freakin' customer service e-mail address? I understand not necessarily wanting to field account questions that way (although I still say if you run a web business, then your customers should be able to do business with you over the web) but all I was looking for was just some sort of suggestion box -- no reply necessary. What possible reason could a company have for not wanting feedback from its customers?
