Is it not possible to get internet only from either Charter or AT&T?

Should be. But Charter will constantly pester you to get bundle. I do internet and land-line w/o TV.

Isn't it illegal to force a consumer to take other options along with internet?

Pestering you to bundle is not "forcing," therefore not illegal.

No, I mean not giving me naked internet, without a bundle.

You can buy internet only, but it costs a lot more than the internet bundled. My internet bundled is $39.99. Last time I checked, internet alone was between $55 and $60.

Yes, you can get Internet only, but nothing prevents them from structuring their pricing to "encourage" you to sign up for additional services.

I have Charter internet only, and it's around $60/mo. I can't see the benefit in getting a land line (which I don't want, I had it removed several years ago) or TV (which I don't want). Several times a week they send me postal mail nagging me to get their $29.99 Internet, but the ads are purposely misleading. That price isn't available unless you take the bundle thing.

The overall Charter system is stacked against me, but I get plenty of use from the internet part. The alternative would be using public wifi in various locations, and some people make that work.

I have never tried to call Charter up and just ask for a price cut, but with no real competitors they have little incentive to give an inch anyway. Of course it's not illegal, but if I had alternatives I would surely take them. I can't see any downward pressures on prices over time. This is not a system managed for the benefit of the consumer; competition is pretty much illusory. You could argue Internet is a utility not a luxury purchase, and maybe someday we'll come around to defining and managing it as such, but not in the near future.

Incidentally Charter now wants to be called Spectrum.

Who do you have for phone? What about internet only from TDS or Verizon?

I would file a BBB complaint asking them to stop mailing. I do that with junk mailers.

TDS no longer does business in my area. I have QLink for cell.

I find it more satisfying to let them bang their head against a wall for years on end, sending me bushels of (recyclable) mail in an effort to make me do something I never will.

I write "Refused" on junk mail and leave it for pickup. Any mail refused has to be returned, and the sender has to pay return postage.

Those official prepaid business return envelopes: they are good for mailing up to 40 lbs. As I dislike AARP, I came close to sending them a package with a couple of bricks in it.

Where do you leave it for pickup? In your mailbox? Interesting idea.

To keep getting all that junk mail is bad for environment.

I honestly think my Charter internet would be $5/mo cheaper if they didn't send me the volume of upgrade come-ons they do.

I have Charter internet and TV. They charge me $60/mo for the internet portion. So having TV too doesn't help lower it.
