Requiring laptops/tablets for school kids

Postby Shorty » Wed Sep 14, 2016 3:20 pm

An increasing trend in WI is for school districts to provide chrome books or tablets for all kids. Then they have to carry them around and use them in class, and take them home for homework. I think it's a bad idea.

-kids should be learning to think for themselves, not rely on computers to do it. Reading and writing are important, too.

-blue light from LED screens disrupts sleep and increases risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, as I discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=56862&p=781079&hilit=blue+light#p781079

-using chrome books/tablets too much can cause injuries like carpel tunnel syndrome.

-kids can lose or drop and break their chrome books/tablets. Who pays for a new one? What if the problem keeps repeating for a kid? How many chances will they get?

-chrome books/tablets make good theft targets. Kids could get hurt when someone steals it.

-chrome books/tablets require frequent charging. How much of a hassle will that be for kids? If they use them at school and home, when will they charge them?

-how do you block Adult porn sites from kids? How do you keep them from playing games when they should be doing school work?

-how much will this cost taxpayers?

Experts say more technology in the classroom is essential

"Kids at Verona Area School District are giving their pencils and notebooks a break and turning their attention over to iPads. The school-wide roll-out is giving students cutting edge technology and allowing them to personalize their learning like never before...“The estimate for the state of Wisconsin is about 42 percent of schools has taken some measure to be a one to one district".

"Wisconsin could be the first state in the country to supply a tablet or laptop computer to nearly all high school freshmen if a proposal by Assembly Republicans becomes law, education officials say. But whether the election-year proposal has a chance of passage is unclear, with lawmakers and state education officials saying they have no idea how the plan would be funded, how the technology would be used, and whether research shows such purchases are effective. But about 42 percent of school districts in the state already have plans under way to provide students with laptops or tablets, according to a survey conducted by the state Department of Public Instruction. And it’s unclear how this proposal would affect their programs, Bales said."

Well wherever these devices come from they will be perfect survailance tools. Just think what data is there - Collin Powell got 'hacked' for what Google already had. Kind of makes you wonder - ehh?

I'm very glad we stayed in a school district that got Apples. My son is making a good living.

Was your son giving an ipad to carry around and use all day? Or do you mean the school simply had an Apple PC computer lab where students could sit down and use them for an hour of so a day? There is a big difference.

How did the Apple at school help him make a good living? Does he work as a programmer? Or is he a heavy computer user? Did anything he learned about Apple in his school days really help him get a better job, or is that due to his college degree(s)?

True, my son had a computer lab and also a Mac at home. He's a programmer.

I have no problem with a computer lab that is shared by students. They would spend no more than an hour a day in front of PC's. That's a big difference from giving every student a laptop/tablet and carrying them around all day, taking them home and back every day.

Time after time, study after study show that smaller class sizes are the number one tool to achievement in the classroom. Sadly, assembly republicans and others would rather cut budgets, cut staff but supply tablets. Is this how they plan to show the Ken Burns documentaries when all of the teachers are gone?

This is a gigantic waste of money for 95% of elementary level students, OK for most high school students.

It’s ‘digital heroin’: How screens turn kids into psychotic junkies
http://nypost.com/2016/08/27/its-digita ... c-junkies/

"We now know that those iPads, smartphones and Xboxes are a form of digital drug. Recent brain imaging research is showing that they affect the brain’s frontal cortex — which controls executive functioning, including impulse control — in exactly the same way that cocaine does. Technology is so hyper-arousing that it raises dopamine levels — the feel-good neurotransmitter most involved in the addiction dynamic — as much as sex.

This addictive effect is why Dr. Peter Whybrow, director of neuroscience at UCLA, calls screens “electronic cocaine” and Chinese researchers call them “digital heroin.” In fact, Dr. Andrew Doan, the head of addiction research for the Pentagon and the US Navy — who has been researching video game addiction — calls video games and screen technologies “digital pharmakeia” (Greek for drug)."

Quick, Shorty! Turn off your computer/phone/tablet, NOW!
You don't want to be a "psychotic junkie", do you?

Hey ... you're still reading this. You're supposed to have turned off your screen! Bad Shorty.
