Black Friday

Postby Shorty » Fri Nov 13, 2015 3:23 pm

The big day is two weeks away! Have you mapped out which stores you will pillage, or will you skip the crowds and buy your loot online? Will you camp outside in a cold parking lot and eat turkey dinner in a tent? Or will you skip all that nonsense and go outside for a walk in the park the REI way?

Savings, savings, savings. i tried to resist but couldn't and did my shopping on-line. Here is my loot:

Friday - All from bestbuy.com
-a pair of Klipsch - Reference 5-1/4" Bookshelf Speakers for $125, normally $250. I thought they were computer speakers but they are for a home theater, which I don't have. I will return them or sell them on ebay.

-ergonomic keyboard for $26

- 40” Samsung LED smart TV and $20 gift certificate for $320. Normally $480 and no gift cert. This will be my first flat screen TV.

Saturday – officemax.com
-office chair for $80, normally $200.

Monday
-dell.com had the same 40” tv I bought Friday but with a $100 gift cert for $320, so I ordered it and will return the Best Buy TV.

Monday night I was bleary eyed from all the online shopping. Recovered now. Thank goodness it's over...until Christmas specials start!

You'll love the flat screen. I haven't done a lick of shopping yet.

I know nothing about TVs, but that one rang a bell.

Thanks for the warning but I don't plan to watch movies using 3rd party apps. The article was from Feb so hopefully they no longer do that.

I hope so but now I realize I will need a new TV stand. Current one is only 30" wide. Here's something I would get from Saks but they are out of my size:

Do you have an enclosed entertainment center? Because if you just mean an open stand, the bases of big flatscreens are pretty small and would certainly fit on top of something 30" wide.

Just an open stand. OK I will give it a try when I find time to set it up.

It will work just fine. 40" is the diagonal measurement of the screen. Back-of-the-envelope calcs lead me to believe that it will only hang about 3 inches over each side of your stand (depending on the actual frame size around the screen). As GUTC stated, the stand itself is much smaller and will fit completely on the stand with plenty of room to spare.

You will also be pleased to know that they're a breeze to set up.

Probably take more time getting out of the box than doing the set up.

What about buying an extended warranty for a tv? I can get two years for $50 or 5 yrs for $80. Do you think either is worth it?

No, in almost all cases an extended warranty on a TV, or any electronics for that matter is a waste of money. Once past a 90 day burn in ( the min warranty length of most ) there are very few breakdowns. Before I retired from consumer electronics repair, it was less than 1 in 500. Now I would guess 1 in 1000 or less.

Electronics has gotten so inexpensive and reliable in the past decade or two that almost all electronics is throw-away out of warranty. A few days ago I threw two CRT style computer monitors in excellent working order in the trash. Flat screen the in-style now.

I usually decline extended warranties. I bet what I've saved over the years from not buying them would equal the cost for any product that fails within the time limitations of those insurance policies.

This topic reminds me of a song.
