Chromebooks

Postby jonnygothispen » Fri Jul 31, 2015 5:11 pm

Just picked up an Asus w/an 11.6" screen from Tiger Direct via Best Buy online. Asus has made the motherboards for reliable models like Toshiba for years, so I trust the brand. Anyway, they finally upgraded by doubling the RAM to 4 gig, and the processor to a quad core. It's ready to rock-n-roll in 5 to 6 seconds, shuts down just as quickly, and the battery lasts an honest 13 hours so far. Delivered to my front door for $205, and it fits in the storage area under a moped seat... cool beans :)

Yeah, still the cheap processor. Actually, they're older high performance processors detuned so they run cooler. It works great so far though.

Chrome OS has only a tiny market. I am not fond of windows, but would worry more about the small market share of your Google Chrome OS. The Memory is fine at 4GB, but the 16GB hard drive way is too small: hope it is expandable. Not much room to add programs etc.

The Nextbook is $40 more but Comes with 4 times the drive space, and upgradeable to twice the 64GB ( 128GM total ). It uses the microSD for both memory and solid state drives space.

The whole point of a Chromebook is you run only Chrome on it.

Why anyone would ever want to run Chrome that tracks and reports your surfing to google is beyond me.

Well. For instance I wouldn't want them to mistake my travels here to mean that I am an ignorant progressive. :)

I have a chromebook and I don't use it much, but I find it pretty handy on occasion. People need to understand that these are very limited machines suitable for nothing much more than surfing the web. They have no moving parts so they're virtually indestructible, no dvd player and very little memory. And if you use Google Chrome for your web browser your pc/laptop and chromebook will synch up whenever you use it, meaning it will update all of your bookmarks, browsing history and probably other stuff I don't know about... which is perhaps what's causing Sandi to panic.

But you're not buying a laptop. And if you think you're getting a cheap "computer" you're going to be disappointed.

If THAT'S an example of panic then you've had several total and complete meltdowns.

That aside....unless you adjust the privacy features (and some say even that won't stop all of it) Chrome will track your activity on the web and send the data back to Google.

Correct CromeOS has a very tiny market. The cromebook also has almost no memory or storage. That is why I recommended a vastly improved tablet with Windows or Android OS: that is nearly as suitable as a laptop.

I use the full Google suite for work nearly constantly. Google docs, gmail and calendar are all synched with my phone.

If you think you're online each day and not being tracked, you're living in a wonderland. Wake up. Except The Pengish One, that is, whose hash usage likely keeps him paranoid, but unable to focus his mind long enough to actually do anything about it.

If you want cheap computing, buy a laptop from 2008ish or later and install Linux. My favorite is Linux Mint 17.2. Has libreoffice for word processing, spreadsheets, the whole tamale.
