Yep, I'm an idiot. No further assistance needed.

About an hour ago, my computer locked up and I rebooted.
Ever since, webpages are not displaying properly.
I normally use Firefox but tried Explorer too and it has the same issues.

Basically, lots of buttons are missing and backgrounds are all white.
On TDPF, for example, I can still see "Post a reply" at the top and bottom of pages, but it's plain hypertext, not a button, and the "Respond to this post" buttons are AWOL.
On Facebook, the "Like" and "Comment" buttons are now plain hypertext, and the top buttons - friend requests, comments, messages - have disappeared. They still function, but I have to run my cursor over them to see they're there.

So far, I tried a simple reboot, I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, and I uninstalled and reinstalled java. That about does it for my ideas. Since I know basically nothing, I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious.

Windows 7, btw.

You might need to reinstall Windows. Save anything you can first.

First run a full virus scan. Then before you re-install windows, re-install your browser.

Reinstalling Windows seems awfully drastic, considering only web browsers seem to be malfunctioning.

I did run a virus scan - two actually - and found nothing.

Don't reinstall just yet. First thing I do when I have to hard-restart the computer for whatever reason:

Once Windows is up, go to Windows (not Internet) Explorer. Click on Computer, find your main hard drive. Right-click on it, then -> Properties -> Tools (tab) -> Error-checking -> click Check Now -> choose all options, then Start.

The computer will have to restart. The scanning process will likely take at least an hour, sometimes two (depending on speed of computer and size of hard drive), so don't do it if you'll need the computer right away.

This is no guarantee it will fix your particular problem, but it's a starting point. When the computer freezes, files can become corrupt and prevent all sorts of operations.

If this doesn't have an immediate effect try starting each browser without add-ons to see if that changes anything.

Ha! It was as simple as changing the display scheme on the desktop!
Somehow, the lockup switched me to "high contrast", which is apparently Microsoft code for "improperly displayed".

So glad I wasted half of my afternoon on a problem that took about 3½ seconds to fix.

Glad to hear it was simple. I'm not surprised-- one setting somewhere in the system can have major consequences.

I'd still recommend the hard drive scan though. At the very least you'll recover usable space.
