mumbo jumbo

Postby jjoyce » Fri Aug 17, 2012 1:45 pm

I get a lot of crap from companies selling mobile technology and many of them use these faux utopian setups which I find to be dumb beyond belief. Am I the only one?

This, for example, just arrived:

Imagine walking down the street. It's 5pm on a sunny Friday afternoon. You're hungry after a long day at the office. You smell pizza, but can't quite figure out where it's coming from. As if by magic, your phone vibrates. Why? The source of your olfactory torment is a mere two blocks away. Your phone prompts you with "40% off a slice of pizza if you come in now."

Does that setup seem at all plausible? Would this ever apply to you?

I get one of these a day, I bet. I don't know a single person who has or would sign up for a service like this.

My buddy was an engineer at ZMD in Middleton and they were working on this tech several years ago. They do processor design. Seems annoying to me. There's already unlimited ways on your cell phone to figure out where that tasty 'za is coming from without what amounts to a pop-up ad. Can't imagine too many would opt in except for the novelty, then promptly opt-out.

I'm pretty sure I haven't gotten dependent enough on technology that I can't figure out where the pizza I'm smelling is at. Jeebus. Have we really come to this as a society?

Of course, Romney-Ryan is considered by a lot of people to be a legitimate pairing for the highest offices in the land. So, yes, we have come to this.

Yes.

I'm waiting for a new Survivor season where they put a dozen people in a motel that's five miles from town. They have bikes, a landline, a phonebook, a paper map, and $100 in cash.

I'd actually watch that (I think).
