Update. After a couple weeks, the computer system's pricing at my nearby Open Pantry now reflects the new cost of the Sunday State Journal, as it scanned out at $2.50.

Thanks for the update, gramps.

I remember sticking a quarter into the machine for the Sunday paper.

I remember trading harvest and livestock for glimpses of the scrolls and sand drawings.

What are these machines you speak of?

I see that madison.com's website is down. I wonder if those who paid to read articles will get a (partial) refund.

I am a Wednesday/Sunday subscriber, and with the advent of the paywall use news websites other than madison.com. However, for a non-daily subscriber, madison.com pretty much has the monopoly on obituaries, and I do visit the site every other day or so to read the obits (wanting not to miss any deaths of friends/church acquaintances of my deceased parents).

An full obit counts as a "story" and hence counts toward the free limit. So, the deceased's family has to pay for the obituary, and then madison.com charges for reading it, in essence. Even though I probably don't read 20 obits a month, it's still annoying as hell when there's nowhere else I can go to get this information.

The mobile site for madison.com doesn't use a paywall. So if you use your phone, or point your regular browser toward http://m.host.madison.com, you can read all you can stomach.

Here's another neat trick: if you want to read all the New York Times you can without subscribing or playing with cookies, just go here: http://cn.nytimes.com/.

Added the first to my favorites/bookmarks. Thanks.

The NYT link wasn't in English. Chinese I think.

Here's a story on madison.com explaining how certain kinds of pages "remain free always:"

Website content exempt from metering

Except, I can't read the list of content "exempt from metering" cuz the list itself is metered.

I just bumped up against this last week. I've been a Wed/Sat/Sun subscriber for a dozen years, and now I can't look up an obit/waste a few minutes at work reading the news because they want MORE money from me? They can suck it, and I'm not renewing my print subscription, either.

I did cancel, or technically speaking, not renew, my print subscription the other day. As I was looking at the renewal notice, the subscription fee for the online site just seemed more and more absurd. The girl in the subscription department was nice, although not at all surprised when she found out the reason for non-renewal. I'm sure gonna miss the Target ad in the Sunday paper :(
