Would you leave the U.S. ?

Postby narcoleptish » Wed May 09, 2012 11:35 am

In these times of uncertainty and division and really bad television, would you move to a different country if you could?

Hypothetically at least. If you had nothing keeping you here (friends, family, dream job, etc) and an easy path to citizenship somewhere else, would you do it and where would you go?

I know Galoot is leaving (or at least trying to) and I seem to remember him/her mentioning NZ. That's where I'd go if I could. Most amazing place I've ever been. Of course that's based on 17 days as a tourist and not trying to make a living, but if I had nothing keeping me here I think I'd take the chance.

Or do you still feel like this is the best the world has to offer?

Try? There is no try, padawan!

NZ was looking possible, then I got a job offer to teach at a private international American school in Salvador, Bahia Brazil.

Yes. Vancouver, B.C. In a heartbeat.

We've talked about moving to the Netherlands if my work provided the opportunity (not likely, but not out of the question). I always picture ending up back here, but we could happily spend a few or more years in NL.

Yeah, in a heartbeat. We're stuck here till retirement but if we could, there are several countries we would prefer to this one and if things are still like this in a few years, we're outta here.

Any of the Scandinavian countries value things like health care, education, parental leave, vacation time, and scientific inquiry to a degree that would throw half this country into a freakout shitstorm.

Of course, this means they're generally ahead of us on nearly every quality-of-life indicator that exists.

Don't plan to. You kids have fun with whatever the one percent lets you keep.

What can I say? We're trendsetters.

Remember when Europeans ridiculed us for being fat? And now it's happening there too. We're the world's California. It just happens here first.

The one percent won't just take over America silly.

They'll come for you no matter where you are.

And when that happens, I'd much rather be here then there.

Wherever "there" happens to be.

You do realize visiting and living are two very different things right?

Well, that was kind of bitchy. Did an expat steal your lunch money or something?

I love Madison, and I expect to live out my life here. But I really enjoyed living and working in NL, and I like the idea of making a longer go of it. Why not get a multinational perspective if circumstances allow?

It's one thing to leave the country for work or to broaden your horizons.

It's another to give up on your country and start packing your bags at the first sign of trouble.

Between you, Meade, and Ted Nugent I'm having second thoughts.

Okay, they're gone.
