Weird Ads on TDPF

Postby Endo Rockstar » Sat Dec 03, 2011 5:57 pm

So I was browsing the Herman Cain Stupidity Thread and hyperlinked in one of Snowqueen's responses there was this ad:

What's the deal with this?

whoops and I mispelled you name sno, sorry about that. I knew it wasn't something you put in there right away, it wasn't a link imbedded in your text, it was a link that was dropped over the top of your text somehow...just finished up running a scan on my computer too, its not a bug that I picked up. I'm stumped.

I haven't seen an ad like that on the Isthmus site yet and I'm on here fairly often. I'm not even sure Isthmus runs HP ads -- does it?

In the last thread we had about advertising on the internet it was disclosed that Isthmus uses a service that delivers ads to several different websites. It was also mentioned in the same thread that those networks are far more vulnerable to hacking attacks than the website itself.

You might want to scan your system again.

You mean there's a way to BLOCK ads ???

USA today is mostly unuseable nowadays due to the ads. I'll look into these "ad blockers".

We're currently not running those third party ads on the site, not event the google ads that used to run in Forum.

Plus, I don't even see a weird link on the page in question. I have to wonder if it wasn't something on another tab you had open or another window.

bdog, if you use Firefox (mozilla) they have an ad-blocker theme you can download. Conveniently named Ad-blocker. Firefox is a free web browser. Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks Lily; I just started using FF a couple weeks ago for other reasons. I'll check out the ad-blocker theme.

Update on this: We discovered that the weird pop-up some of you were seeing was actually coming from ComScore, an industry metrics service. We had embedded their script on our pages in order to get an accurate accounting for who was visiting our site (we do the same for Google analytics). Apparently the survey just came as part of the package.

We have discontinued the service.

Hope the rest of their subscribers discontinued too. It seems sleazy for them to inflict pop-ups on your readers when their supposed intent was simply to gather readership counts.

Thanks for making the forum "experience" a little better.
