Pay to name someone else's child?

Postby ArturoBandini » Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:26 pm

Since having my own human spawn would be rather expensive and time consuming, I thought about paying someone else who's already expecting a child to name their future-human an awesome name that I chose.

Would that be ethical? The offer would read like:
"$50 cash for evidence (photocopy of birth certificate) that your new baby is named "Bertrand Russell (+ your surname)". No strings attached."

I checked it out - a legal name change costs about $100, so it would not be in the economic interest of the new parents to immediately change the name back. In exchange for my small investment, a human being now carries with them a small token of certain ideas that I admire.

Thoughts? What would you name another person's child?

If that's what you need to build your ego and you can find willing parents I'm all for it. I think $50 is low balling them though. By a lot.

I think it's not enough either, but it would be too easy to just have the name changed back and keep the extra dough. You could pay more ($500?) if there were some kind of contractual obligation to keep the name until age 18 or something. This 'feels' very dirty and unethical to me, but it is really no different than a parent naming their kid "Matthew" and he or she being stuck with that name until they've reached legal age.

I wouldn't choose humiliating or derogatory names (at least not to me) - no Adolf Hitler Johnsons or anything.

Have you considered naming a goldfish, or perhaps your car?

In these economic times you could probably find a few adults willing to take your offer. Maybe you'd feel less "dirty" if it wasn't a child.

For $10 large I'll let you name my wang.

And no, I won't feel dirty about it.

Just as an FYI - he's currently called 'Mr. Wiggles.'

I never had any kids but I always thought if I'd had a boy I'd name him Henry Aaron.

No, Mr. Aaron didn't offer to pay me, either.

Wouldn't the payment part sort of wreck the idea of honoring somebody?

I think payment came into play becasue the OP doesn't think it's likely that he would do anything honorable or have his own kids.

Maybe you read the Badger Herald on occasion, as I do, and maybe not, but just to be sure.
