Yet another problem with SUVs

Postby Ned Flounders » Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:30 am

... in the Netherlands, it turns out that a lot of SUVs are too big to fit into the afwerkplekken that were constructed back in the 1980s:

What are "afwerkplekken", you ask?

And if you drive a big SUV, isn't that compensation for ...something lacking...maybe making you more likely to frequent said afwerkplekken?

Yeah, ironic, isn't it?

The need for an afwerkplek, and the need for a vehicle too big to fit into most afwerkplekken, probably stem from the same, uh, shortcoming.

My old next door neighbor's daughter bought her a Cadilac, too big to fit into her townhouse garage, so she got a Lumina.

I bought a van from a millionaire, because he ordered a cleaning machine too big, to fit in the new van.

Don't these people think about that before?

I had to bring my biggest guitar case (gibson explorer) to the dealership to make sure it fit in my jeep before I purchased it. It would have been a dealbreaker, but fortunately it fits in there several ways.

I've delivered a lot of furniture and appliances in my life and I will tell you that the doorways and hallways of many houses, old and new, weren't designed for our ever-growing taste for giant couches, beds and refrigerators, but no one is demonizing those things.

I find some people's multiple line, credential flaunting email signatures to be more suspiciously compensatory than driving a big truck.

And as someone who drives a great big van, because that's what I need for my job, I'm offended that some businesses are now reserving front row parking for "hybrid vehicles only". You're not handicapped, you're not a senior citizen, you just have a certain kind of car! How fucking pretentious is that!

Baby on board.

You don't see those signs in car windows as much as you used to, but they were annoying for a similar reason.

We're supposed to run into a different car because yours has a baby on board? Come on.

I only run into cars that display a I Stand With Scott Walker bumper sticker on them.

I saw an updated, toned-down version in Metcalfe's parking lot last weekend and thought, you realize that's gonna make me aim for you, right? And then thought, wow, I'm a sociopath.
