Discovering Wisconsin: Dick Bong

Postby fennel » Thu Nov 29, 2007 10:36 pm

In this week's Discovering Wisconsin:

Who knew there was a Dick Bong Airport in Superior, Wisconsin? (SUW) Put that in your mouth and smoke it!

Does anyone have any good Superior stories? I hear they have an interesting Great Lakes shipping museum.

I don't know that there is a whole lot more to do in Superior, but you can always take the Bong Bridge over to Duluth.

I knew someone in college who had stolen this sign and put it up in their room.

I knew someone who smoked a bong next to that sign, as traffic whizzed by, and had his picture taken.

I grew up in beautiful Superior - there is now a Richard (Dick) Bong Museum on the way into town! Yes, T-shirts are available. Bong was a WWII fighter pilot that I know nothing about.

Two bridges lead over the bay to Duluth - the newer Bong Bridge, and the older High Bridge.

Dick Bong was apparently a very heroic fellow who died very early in life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_bong

He was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Cross. Wikipedia has this about him too: "By April 1944, Captain Bong had shot down 27 aircraft, surpassing Eddie Rickenbacker's American record of 26 credited victories in World War I."
