If only we had good passenger rail service in this country. Then we could actually say "fuck you " to all the domestic airlines.

I think that the entire process involved in flying somewhere has become such an unpleasant hassle, that the "fuck you" has already begun. For example, I will not consider flying to any destination I can drive to in a day. That wasn't always the case, and I don't think I'm unique in that regard.

You are not unique. I know others who feel the same way.

Part of the United issue was also the fact that if you put a badge on a bully you get trouble. One wonders if the officer was racist against Asians or just a bully. Or both.

I do know that if you fly enough and join the right programs you are treated better. That is why I paid the $85 and got fingerprinted for TSA pre check and also got silver status with United. For example, on a trip today I sailed through security on the main part of a trip and got bumped up to First Class for the journey from O'Hare to Madison. Got some vodka in my OJ and a more comfortable seat.

People who don't fly often are treated like cattle. I just read about a couple on the way to their wedding who were removed from a flight because they kept sneaking from economy to economy plus empty seats without permission

I believe some of us are doing everything we can to avoid flying, and some of us are avoiding United but I believe most of us will pretty much go on as usual. I agree with the three authors of this article:
Why people will keep flying United even if they don’t want to
As deeply troubling as the video is, analysts said, the emotional fury such incidents generate usually is fleeting, lasting a few days or weeks at most. The reality, they say, is that consumers have long put price, convenience and personal taste ahead of outrage.

For me the reality is that this country elected Donald freakin Trump. That right there says that about half of us are stone cold rock bottom stupid. We think price tags that say $2.99 are closer to two bucks than three. We still think tax cuts for the rich creates jobs. We think there's an agenda to turn us all gay, establish Sharia law, and take away our guns, and we're still absolutely positive Obama is a Kenyan born Muslim.

The notion that anybody that dumb would have a problem flying United if it's a dollar cheaper seems ludicrous to me. We are a nation of uneducated authoritarian fearmongers who think the government is simultaneously trying to control us all, taxing us unfairly and then wasting it on foolishness, and then failing in its duty to take care of us.

We are a nation who thinks everyone should respect the flag of the country we are stockpiling arms against.

United will suffer some stock losses and pay less than one year's worth of its CEO's salary, it will change some of its tactics so it won't appear to be as heartless and brutal as it really is, just like every other US Airline will, and then this will be forgotten and things will go back to pretty much what they were before, with some minor changes.

^^^^ Agree to a great extent,

EXCEPT, there could be a small permanent damage to the brand unless United acts quickly to improve customer service.

They have acted quickly as hell.
United booted a couple traveling to their wedding, just days after public relations fiasco

But these folks were asking for it.
He told KHOU that he and Maxwell moved to two vacant seats because a sleeping passenger was sprawled across their seats a few rows away. After airline personnel told them to go back to their assigned seats, they complied, Hohl said; still, he said, law enforcement officers came in minutes later and escorted them off the plane.

To be fair, United claims the couple were continuously moving into empty Economy Plus seats, when they were peasants who had only paid for Economy. Most passengers can't tell the difference, but they charge more $ for E+, EXCEPT that since I am now Silver, I can upgrade to E+ 24 hours before my flight, and grab any empty E+ seats. Even if there are empty E+ seats, with a full FIVE INCHES OF EXTRA LEGROOM, they can't have peasants sitting in the seats without paying extra money.

Of course, if United actually believed in customer service, they would see a couple on their way to be wed, and they would be nice and upgrade them to E+ as a goodwill gesture. The alternative is to get hammered in the press again. First the leggings, then the beating, then the scorpion, now this.

If the guy was sleeping across several seats, he was probably drunk or on drugs, and United was sure to know this too. Showing deference to someone on drugs or drunk doesn't fly well with me.
