Privatize VA Care?

Postby Bwis53 » Tue Apr 04, 2017 7:39 pm

I received this email today:

"With my VA card, I can walk into any VA medical center in the country and have access to world class integrated health care designed specifically for me, a veteran. But Donald Trump and some of his ultra-conservative allies in Congress want to privatize that care and turn it into a voucher system. It's a move that would amount little more than a massive redistribution of wealth from the American taxpayer who help fund veterans' health care to some of the richest health care executives in the world. This issue hasn't come up yet in Congress, but it will. And when it does, we need them to know that the American people -- and especially veterans -- are OPPOSED to any legislation that would privatize veterans' health care. Veterans overwhelmingly oppose turning over veterans' health care to for-profit corporations that are going to make us fight for the benefits we've earned. Your signature sends a powerful message that that we are going to fight tooth and nail on this issue, never yielding an inch along the way."

It's not surprising. The ideology of the party in power is that everything, aside from defense and the criminal justice system, should be in private hands. It predates that evil socialist, FDR. They don't want to take us back to the 50's. They want to take us back to the 19th century.

Not a good idea in my opinion. Why do they hate our veterans?

in think VA care varies drastically from hospital to hospital, clinic to clinic, state to state. Why? First off, capacity. We just added hundreds of thousands of Afghani and Iraqi War veterans to the system- that's a lot of IED injuries! Closed head trauma, amputations, PTSD, you name it. Then you have to figure that the number of Doctors/Clinicians has remained static in the system (and American in general) over the past 2 decades. Then look at the VA's with the worst records. They are in either heavily populated areas (Phoenis, for example) with a large number of Vets (longer waits, more pressure to treat and discharge) or rural areas (less Doctors/Clinicians) that still have to service large swaths of a state (Tomah, WI for example). Privatization won't solve anything. Less war might, you know, help.

It doesn't matter whether privatization is a good idea or not. Our rulers believe in it. So we serfs will be getting it.

I already posted about this some time ago in another thread. Roy, also a vet, doesn't seem to care. But most vets I know are totally opposed to privatization.

Actually I don't have enough info about the privatization to have an decent opinion either way.
