Are Trumpers just plain Angry and Losers in General?

Postby fflambeau » Sun Apr 02, 2017 8:10 pm

There's an interesting article, not really well written but with one nugget of good in a lot of dross, over at the Guardian. It's about Ukip, the British nativist party/group that pushed for Britain leaving the European Union, but it has some application for the USA too.

The author concludes that the people who supported UKIP (like the Trump people) are simply angry at life in general and that even their "win" (meaning withdrawing from the EU) doesn't change that. If so, the same would apply for the Trump supporters: having him in office will not make them less angry, less irresponsible, and more humane. As the author put it:

"But, my instinct is that their crisis runs deeper than this: the leading Ukippers have spent decades convinced that the anger and dissatisfaction they felt, with which their lives were infused, was caused by one thing. And now the thing has gone. What if they feel the same? A crushing realisation for them, but also for the rest of us."

I'm afraid this analysis is correct and that the angry and angst that the Trump people have will not go away. It's the same realization that I came away with from my long conversation with a Trump supporter (described in another thread). He was angry, he had a sense of being a loser in life and the Trump "win" wasn't going to change that. That's scary.

It would be a mistake to over-generalize. At least two of my acquaintances who voted for Trump voted for Sanders in the primary. They just really hated Hillary Clinton with a passion. I'm sure there is a goodly amount of angry "losers" among Trump supporters, but they aren't all like that.

With that, plus all the other errors in the post ("natavist"?), it's amusing that effing flambeau's first sentence knocks someone else's work for being poorly written.

I happen to think it's all true. Angry Trump voters think "all we need is this and then..."

When they get the "this" but then don't get the ... their frustration will grow.

That's because they're idiots and won't take responsibility for their own lives.

Same thing happened with the Obama administration. Of course then it turned into "all we need is the Republicans to do this ...".

It's all bullshit, all these people need to be responsible for their own lives.

I don't endorse the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" as lots of people don't even have that.

But stop pointing fingers. Point the finger at yourself first and see where that gets you.

Shit. That's right. I'm the one who voted to repeal Obamacare fifty times, and I'm the one who said my primary objective is making Obama a one term president. And I refused to do that Supreme Court judge thing. Crap. Now I'm all remorseful.

Well there you go...

Because X happened ... I can't do Y.

You will always be at the mercy of someone else's actions with that attitude.

Most people live their lives that way.

Yeah, and other people feel the need to point out what they think are the shortcomings of others to distract themselves from their own shit.

If the article is correct (I realize it doesn't apply to all Trump supporters but would hazard a guess that it does to most of them) them we are all in deep doo doo.
