"Self medicate"!!! Laugh Out Loud! After another 8 hours of looking for work, no doubt. Another grueling day of learning a trade and studying, who can blame a person for self-medicating. Especially since they can't get thru the ObamaCare website.

Ah, the tired old "shiftless and lazy" meme.
Never saw that coming, especially from a hack like you.

Don't you have somewhere that you can go and cry about how the "intolerant liberals" ran you off?

Ah, the tired old "they're victims" meme. Powerless to better their lot. Beaten down by the Bradley Foundation, who want to turn half of America into impoverished, atavistic out-castes. If only we could elect more Democrats -- poverty would be abolished (probably through legislation). That meme!

Fraud is breaking the law or bending the regulations for one's own benefit.

It is not fraud to qualify for food assistance, use your card at the grocery store, and later on spend your pocket money at a tavern. There's no law against doing that.

If you think it should be illegal, talk to your legislator. We've got a state legislature right now that is more than willing to go along with you. The Tavern League might not like it but tough shit, they're nothing but small business.

Queenie, I'm not the one crying about reverting to the status quo ante on food stamps (SNAP) nor am I an enabler by pretending that people are "self-medicating" their poverty. I am, however, making the case that government cannot lift anyone out of poverty. If you disagree, please say so.

shiftless...lazy...
The overwhelming majority of SNAP recipients who can work do so. Among SNAP households with at least one working-age, non-disabled adult, more than half work while receiving SNAP — and more than 80 percent work in the year prior to or the year after receiving SNAP. The rates are even higher for families with children — more than 60 percent work while receiving SNAP, and almost 90 percent work in the prior or subsequent year.

But I'm sure it's more convenient to simply assume that they're just laying around between trips to the corner tavern.

Yep, you've got that one covered, as well:
From December 2007 to November 2011 he wrote the..."Blaska's Blog" for Isthmus online's "The Daily Page" until, he says, the intolerant liberals ran him off.

Boo-fucking-Hoo. Poor Blaska, always (playing) the victim of those durned libruls.

"government cannot lift anyone out of poverty" is the new code for "Some people are playing the system so fuck the kids, let 'em starve to death."

I wonder who will lift the unfortunate out of poverty. Business isn't doing it, nor is it providing the opportunities for people to lift themselves.

Government must be involved because business the private sector fails.

In all seriousness, Wack, how does government "provide the opportunities"? What opportunities would those be?

That's why I say, Wack, that people make their own opportunities. If they're waiting for The Man, they're going to wait a long time.

(And save the boo-hooing, I didn't "self-medicate" when Isthmus pushed me out the door; I rounded up two better-paying gigs. I did tie one on a few times in celebration, however.)

Has Blaska taken advantage of his own share of government handouts? Surely, he has taken the mortgage interest deduction, no? Received benefits from teh gubmint?

As a recipient of governmental assistance, he should refrain from alcohol consumption, right? Where is the outrage?
