Okay. BEFORE the report was out, the buzz was all about how the report would show that the global wasn't warming and the climate wasn't changing, and the alarmists were all gonna hafta eat crow because this report was going to force everybody to jump ship, and the denierists were going to be proven right by SCIENCE! They really loved that report.

Today the report is published and NOW it's a bunch of bullshit and only an idiot would give it any credibility.

Careful, there, Nedders--you seem to have confused the UN and the GOP.

How do you figure?

Ned didn't say anything about GAY hookers.

You just assumed that, and jumped to the obvious conclusion that it was about the GOP.

My bad. I forgot about the GOP stance on gay prostitution--a rather wide one, if I remember correctly.

The IPCC report gives us this for ocean level rise:
The new report projects that global mean sea level rise for 2081-2100 will likely be in the range of 10.2 to 32 inches, depending on greenhouse gas emissions. However, the report notes, as other studies have found, that local amounts of sea level rise could be much higher in some coastal areas.

The denyerists liked this report when they thought it was going to back off on the warmenist stuff, but now that it's out they don't like it any more.

Still. We now have a prediction that the ocean is going to be at least 10 inches higher in 60 or 70 years. Not only because of melting ice but because the ocean itself is getting warmer and water expands when it's heated.

So we've got like fifty years to say goodby to a whole lot of coastline. Plenty of time to prepare.

I mean, at least we can do some checking, right? Get ourselves an idea what neighborhoods and towns are going to be underwater by the time today's babies are retiring?

We can at least do that, can't we?

Not necessary. Jesus is coming back to save us, so we don't have to do squat.

I sure hope I'm around to see this (bear witness for you religious types).

There is no way Jesus returns to embrace fossil fuels. I expect those who deny its deleterious effects will receive a stern talking-to.

Alaska is sinking.
The nation's last frontier is — in many ways — its ground zero for climate change. Alaska's temperatures are rising twice as fast as those in the lower 48, prompting more sea ice to disappear in summer. While this may eventually open the Northwest Passage to sought-after tourism, oil exploration and trade, it also spells trouble as wildfires increase, roads buckle and tribal villages sink into the sea.

Fair and balanced reporting of IPCC report?
I think not.
Surveys have shown that 97 percent of peer-reviewed literature and climate scientists accept that human activities are a major factor causing global warming -- only 3 percent do not accept this consensus position. Yet doubters comprised over 18 percent of those quoted by Bloomberg News, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post -- giving this minority view over five times the amount of representation it has in the scientific community. Half of those quoted in The Wall Street Journal were doubters, about 29 percent in Los Angeles Times, about 17 percent in The Washington Post and about 12 percent in Bloomberg News.

More bad news:
Average annual temperatures will start to consistently exceed the highest levels previously recorded in as little as seven years in tropical hotspots and within four decades for the majority of the globe if nothing is done to stop climate change, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Nature.

Have you read the report?

Not the extended press release they did several days before they actually released the report but the report itself.

It does make for interesting reading.

So they are making a prediction of 70 years from now.

They have been so accurate with all their other predictions. Still waiting for someone to show one they got right.

Perhaps someone could explain why we should pay any attention to this one?

Pretty please with sugar on top?

John Henry, you asked the same thing back in January, and I gave you an answer in the very first post of this thread:

Climate change

There have been plenty of successful predictions from climate science. In addition, when predictions are wrong they're as likely to underestimate as to overestimate actual changes. The fact that you're unaware of this isn't the fault of scientists. It's a problem with the extreme right-wing media environment that you credulously rely on.

It's the same extremist media environment that led you to post utter nonsense here suggesting that the Newtown School Massacre was deliberately carried out by the US government to promote gun control.

New leaked report from the IPPC: its going to get bad.
By 2100, hundreds of millions of people in coastal areas will be flooded or displaced by rising sea levels. The arid subtropics will have less fresh water, leading to more competition for resources.

The global food supply is also at risk, with yields of wheat, rice, corn and other major crops projected to drop by as much as 2% each decade for the rest of the century, even as demand rises.

A new study by British and Canadian researchers shows that the global temperature rise of the past 15 years has been greatly underestimated. The reason is the data gaps in the weather station network, especially in the Arctic. If you fill these data gaps using satellite measurements, the warming trend is more than doubled in the widely used HadCRUT4 data, and the much-discussed “warming pause” has virtually disappeared.

... after filling the data gaps this trend is 0.12 °C per decade and thus exactly equal to the long-term trend mentioned by the IPCC

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar ... d-by-half/

So, no pause in the warming.

Keep flipping a coin, rest assured it will land on whichever side you want. Keep shaking the Magic 8 Ball, you will get eventually the answer you are looking for. But why masquerade such an impulse as 'scientific enthusiasm'? It's only science you like when it says what you want it to say. Have they come up with a collection of prominent survey data that's pared down to where they can fit it all on a giant roll of 2-ply bathroom tissue? Because I could find some use for that.
